Often, as I read in a medico
legal Journal a summary of
the evidence taken in a mal
practice suit, I get a strong
impression, from my life-time
of medical experience, that
either the claimant (patient)
had no case, or else the de
fendant (doctor or hospital or
drug house) had made a mis
take, or the patient was at
fault in that he was extreme
ly and abnormally and almost
uniquely sensitive to a drug
used, or it was the sort of
case in which only God could
say why things had gone
wrong
Now, I am happy to read
that in the City of New York,
four very able physicians have
agreed to serve as an advis
ory panel on all malpractice
claims against the city. As I
understand It (1) the claims
' will quickly be examined, (2)
If the panel of doctors think
there was negligence and poor
Judgment or malpractice, they
will advise that the claim be
Immediately accepted and set
tled, or 3) if they think the
claimant has no case, they
will advise the city attorneys
to fight.
Such panels have been very
helpful in some olher cities.
I understand that in several
places the plan has worked
well, and has made for good
public relations because peo
ple have soon learned that if
they really were wronged,
their doctor will be strongly
advised to accept his respon
sibility and pay up.
Treatment lor Migraine
I recently received a Idler
from a woman who says that
when desperate with mi
graine, she went to a man who
is said to be an expert in
this field. As usually happens
today, he put her in a hospital,
and during the three weeks
she was given every test
known to science. As always
happens in cases of migraine,
nothing was found that could
cause the migraine, but the
bill was in four figures. The
woman says the doctor then
saw her for ten minutes: he
said, "Don't touch ergolaniine,
it can do you harm." and
dismissed her.
To my way of thinking,
this was pour advice because

years 1 have been giving this
drug to hundreds of women,
and as yet I have seen no
bad results from it. Only a
few women refused to take it
because they seemed to be
allergic to it. It can be taken
by mouth, as a pill, or a spray;
or it can be dissolved under
the tongue or taken in, a rcc
tal suppository, or, best of all,
it can be injected hypodermi
cally. A related and often
very helpful, but weaker,
drug is DHE45. It is best in.
Jected under the skin; when
it works well it is a joy.
What is sad is that I know
of no drug that, as yet, can
be counted on to keep the
headaches from coming. A
new one has recently come
on the market but so far my
patients have not been en
thusiastic about It. I have
seen migraine disappear when
the woman learned to quit
fussing at life to quit try
ing to have everything run
just so, and right on time, and
as planned. The trouble with
most migrainous women (men
usually have only a mild form
of the disease) is that they
are overly sensitive and they
are perfectionists.

ing me about gastritis, and I
can't tell them much, if only
because, after years of study
of the problems of gastritis,
I am not sure what the symp
toms are, granting that the
changes in the lining of the
slomach produce any symp
toms at all. For this reason
I think today few stomach spe
cialists diagnose gastritis.
Incidentally, the word gas
tritis has nothing to do with
gas The letter "gastr" come
from the Greek word for slom
ach, and "itis" means an in
flammation. Usually, when a
patient conies in with the di
agnosis of gastritis and I ex
amine him thoroughly, I have
to end up saying, "1 am sorry,
but I don't know whether you
have it or not. Worse yet.
you have it, 1 don't know how
to cure it. '

coming of cancer. All 1 can
say is that if a person has
had his stomach pumped and
if he has no acid In the gastric
Juice (indicating an atrophic
gastritis), and especially if he
has pernicious anemia, his
chances of getting a cancer

the average person.

Glenn T. My niece is 25.
married and the mother of
two children. Her mother is
my sister and we are a closely
knit family. We watched
Myrna grow up and we re
joiced that she Joined into
church activities so enthusias
tically. When she married a
fellow from New York, she
had a bcatiful church wedding
and took her vows at the
altar.
But that was six years ago
and tragedy has set in since
then. At least it's tragic to
our family, and especially to
my sister and her husband.
Myrna has renounced the
church. She says she and her
husband have a new philoso
phy. Her children haven't
been baptized, and nave never
s'epped inside a house of wor
ship. How can she be so disre
spectful and ungrateful?
Myrna B. Once away from
all the small-town narrowness
I grew up with, I realized that
the important thing was to
be kind and good, not to sit
through boring sermons and
turn the' pages of prayer
books. My husband opened my
eyes to other philosophies
He's a college professor, teach
es psychology and logic, and
has traveled all over the
world. Our friends are olher
couples who feel as we do,
that this is the real world,
that both heaven and hell
must be right here, and that
trusting to the unknown and
waiting for the hereafter is a
waste of time op earth, as
well as an affront to intelli
gence.
I love my parents dearly
and I regret that they are
taking this so hard. But just
because the church fills their
needs doesn't mean it must
automatically fill mine. They
should think about that.
The Council: Some defec
tions from the family "ways"
stem from normal rebellious
ness, are more emotional than
reasoned and are restored
when anger Is spent, and the
"point" has been made-name-
ly that t h e prodigal has a
mind of his own. In Myrna's
case, however, the parting of
the ways at the foot of the
church steps seems more seri
ous. Our exhortations, there
fore, are not that she return
to the fold merely to make
the family happy, but that the
family try to accept the fact
that she has found a peace
and a grace which seem to
satisfy her. Although some
churchmen will object to our
position here, we accept
Myrna's thesis that the "faith"
of a child need not necessarily
be the identical faith of the
father.
While Glenn and the family
believed and hoped thai
Myrna would Just follow
along in the traditional spirit
ual paths, they must now
grant her and her husband the
right to soul-search on their
own for the answers which fill
in the spaces still left blank
to them, despite the years of
church instruction. Musi a

enjoyment if he finds, by hap
py coincidence, that Beethov
en speaks directly to him, too,
as to his parents, that Bee
thoven supplies Ihe emotional
food for which he is hunger

that all is not lost. Myrna is
probing the world's best
thoughts, philosophies, moral
systems, in search of insight
into both herself and her par

Culture, Bahai, etc.. or revert
some day lo the old "tried and
true" of her ancestors.

Nobel Prize for literature, to
be announced Oct. 25.
Informed sources say that
between 50 and 60 names
have been proposed fo: con
sideration by the Swedish
Academy of Letters, which
awards the literature prize.
American novelist John
Steinbeck, who was consid
ered some years ago, was put
back on the list this year in
a high position, the sources
said.
Israeli theologian Martin
Buber, who was recommend
ed as a candidate last year

ble top-runner.

Some sources said the
academy perhaps would con
sider giving the prize to
Buber for his book "I and

when you choose slocks and bonds
Maybe you're considering whether or not investing in se
curities would fit your situation. You might have in mind
owning stock to increase your income through dividends or
perhaps to give your capital a chance to grow as Uie years
go by. Or you might be thinking of the greater stability of
bonds.
Now for the big question : how to go about it?
Wroag: Jump in when the first hot tip comes along.
Right: What's the hurry? Buy securities the way you'd
buy anything important -with care. When a company in
terests you, get all the facts you can-growth pattern, profit
record, factors that might alTcct its future. Most of Ameri
ca's best known companies arc among the 1,200 listed on
the New York Stock Exchange. This group earns more than
60 of the net profits reported by U. S. corporations. They
pay stockholders about 60 of all dividends. Roughly 90
of them have paid cash dividends in the last 12 months.
Wroag: Don't worry about risks. You're bound to win.
Right: There's no such thing as investment without risk.
Many things cause slock prices to go up and down. What's
more, a company may not conlinue to pay dividends on
slock or interest on bonds. It's just common sense to keep
the risks in mind. But if your company prospers, you may too.
Wrong: Invest every cent you can lay your hands on.
Right: Provide for living expenses and those inevitable
emergencies first. Then decide what might be invested. Start
