I3bi D 3 Over 1,000 Attend Miller Services Point Reyes Station, Calif. -(CPU-More than 1,000 mourn ers Saturday attended funeral services for Rep. Clem Miller at the national seashore site for which he fought so hard in Congress. The services, marred by a driving rainstorm, were held in a grove of pines and oaks about a mile from the grave . site. Gravedside services had to be cancelled because of the wind-driven torrents of rain. The 46-year-old Democrat, who had represented Califor nia's huge First Congressional district since 1958, was killed in a plane crash last Sunday. "Somehow he found time for all of us," said Rev. Theo dore Gill in his eulogy. "He was alive with love, and lived twice as much in half of his life than most of us live in ours." Miller was buried in a half acre tract on a knoll overlook ing wind-swept Drake's bay, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. Occasionally she pounded the garment on a nearby stone thai jutted out from the bank. By her side was a pile of dry clothes as yet unwashed. The water she wrung from the gar ments was brown as ink, col ored by the juices of the cy press trees. It would seem that the choc olate colored water would Im part some of its darkness to the clothes. But apparently it docs not, for the dresses seem ed clean and bright. The Indian woman hung the washed garments on the brandies of a nearby tree. And all this was happening now, In this year of the guid ed missile and the earth-circling satellite. WATKINS Register and Tribunt Syndicate 1962) food is cooked will come from the burning of lugs. To her while sisters, t h e washing clothes on a smooth rock or the cooking of a rml over a campfirc is doing sim ple tasks the hard way. But the Seminole woman is 'tc complishing it in the way her mother taught her. To her the building of a cookfire is a fine arc. The cooking fire is not just a pile of logs piled haphazardly on the ground and ignited. It fol lows a pattern developed by many generations of Indian forefathers. The use of matches to start the fire is a modern touch, b'lt the log arrangement that will furnish the most heat was de cided on a hundred or more years ago. The logs are ar ranged like spokes in a wheel, butt-ends together. Moving the logs in increases the fire; pti'l ing them out decreases the heal. The Indian woman can control the fire, low or high, depending on what or how fast she wants to cook. Flickering Campfire When the cooking is com pleted and the sun has gone from the Everglades, the world is dark. The campfire flickers In the gathering dark ness. Different from the cook-fire or the campfire is the council fire. For around this, great decisions are made . . , not in a smoke-filled room, but in the office of the great out doors. Here no electric light brightens the scene . . only the flickering fire that blazes and dies down. It drives the shadows back, only to allow them to come rushing in again as the fire dies a little. At the edge of the shadowy area, between the light and the dark, the men of the tribe debate the issue. The lesser folk wait in the shadows while the "wise ones" make the de cision. For it is the leaders who sit in the light close to where the council fire casts its brightest glow.
