They'll Do It E 'ery TuE PAILPOAD STATION BROOM BOYS JUST SEEM TO WAIT IN THC BULL PEN DURISJ3 THE OPF HOURS faMLMlffi edford Sailor on rsarge Pick-Up of "He made it and we made it!" This is the way Radio Sea man William D. Deckard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Deckard, 904 Summit ave., Medlord, described t h e s u c -cessful completion oi the six orbital flight of the Mercury capsule. Deckard is serving aboard the support aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge which recov ered U.S. Astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr. and the Mer cury capsule from the Pacific ocean Oct. 3. The seaman described in detail the activities of the day as they concerned personnel aboard the Kearsarge in a let ter to his parents. Deckard joined the Naval Reserve El ectronics division in Medford in November, 1959, and went on active duty aboard the USS Kearsarge in February, 1962. It was 1:15 a.m. aboard the carrier when the rocket left Cape Canaveral. "We sure are happy," the seaman wrote after the suc cessful shot, "My ears are glued to the speaker, this shot is something personal! "We are in direct communi cation with Cape Canaveral and the astronaut," he wrote. Immediately after the lift off a voice over the speaker said, "Attention all hands, the as tronaut has left Cape Canav eral for tile Kearsarge. "I don't know how the rest of the men feel, but I feel rather excited," Deckard wrote his parents. "I'm part of a history making event and I know it, but somehow I don't feel the way I think I should, whatever that is sup posed to be. "The space capsule landed only four miles away from the USS Kearsarge, just off the port (left) bow. Out of 40 ships in the project, we were the one to pick up both the astronaut and the capsule, the first carrier yet to do so. "Immediately after the landing we rushed toward him and launched the heli copters. The captain maneu vered the ship so we could bring the space capsule aboard. The whale boat put the ropes into position and a winch pulled the space craft aboard. "You should have heard the ovation! "The capsule was hauled on board with the crane and lowered onto mattresses put into a little cradle built for it. "Officials ordered the peo ple around the capsule away. When everyone was out of danger and- all was quiet, there was an explosion and the hatch opened. The NASA officials gathered around to Strife Affecting Mississippi Firms Greenville. Miss. - 'LTD -The s;ate's racial strife has affected business dealings be tween some Mississippi and northern firms, il was reveal ed Wednesday. Kocstler Tile Company said it recently ordered 1.000 cor respondence forms from Re cent Stand Forms, Inc., Phil adelphia. Koestcler said it re ccivrd this reply: "Thank you for your order for 1.000 form-1100. I'm afraid we are going to have to hold up your order until the government of Mississippi settles its differences with the government of the Unit ed States. There is nothing personal in this, of course, but it troubles our conscience to do business with a stale that is in rebellion against the federal government. . "Shall we hold your order until such time as Mississippi has reentered the union?" Owner Bill Kocstler said he had replaced the order with a Texas concern. He said he had not answered the let ter from Philadelphia. Time Tien comes on the job a salmon Describes Schirra see how Commander Schirra was. "Nothing moves for a while, then you see a hand come out of the capsule, then both. Next you see his helmet then the rest of his body as he inches out. He seems to be trying to climb to the lop of the space craft. His foot conies out, then the other as he steps onto the deck." The seaman wrote that an opening was made from Ele vator 3 to sick bay (ship's hos pital) that was lined by Ma rines. "Men are packed all along the way so they could get a glimpse of Schirra. He passed right by me - he sure looked good in the space suit." Deckard was able to take pictures of both Schirra and the space capsule during the lime they were aboard the Kearsarge. The ship headed for Hawaii after picking up the astronaut and after a few days at Pearl Harbor pro ceeded to Long Beach, Calif.
