The . outcome of the voting may determine the political future of ' Quadros, who is running for governor of Sao Paulo State ; as the first step in an attempted comeback. It was from ' this office that he ascended to the presidency. It will take two weeks to tabulate the 15 million votes cast in the election. (UPI) i Little Froghopper Blowj Bubbles to Build Nursery "Frog-spit" the boys called it, without any logical explan ation as to just how a frog could climb up such a .small Mn...r.f clalk nr W1V it sllOUld "spit" in such an unlikely place. Those who reasoned the lo cation of the blob of glisten ing bubbles as unattainable by a frog, came up with the name cuckoo spit." They didn't ex plain,, either, what sort of creature a cuckoo was, or whether it was in the habit of depositing a frothy mass of bubbles on the stem of some wildflower or weed. . When they discovered that a bug known as a froghopper whipped up the mass of bub bles, they promptly named the creature a spittle-bug. It still seems impossible that a bug as small as a lrognopper '-.m.M eviiHp curh as mass of material, for the little thing is less than a quarter nf an inch long. It is a flat, rather broad bug, often spotted with yel low on its usually black or dark brown body. Because? he hops when frightened, and does look a little "froggy." he I,u llm n:imr conies t-uaii.v uj - "froghopper." Separate one from his fel lows and examine hiin under a glass, and he really doesn't amount to very much. He looks so sad and solemn. Of course where the trouble for the garden plants or fruit trees comes is hi me uuk a as tronomical numbers. Suck Juices Froghoppers spend most of their time sucking juices from plant stems. The copious amount of sap they drink is later turned into the material they whip up into a mass of frothv bubbles. In this blob thry hide as they drink more plant sap and secrete their eggs. There the young are pro tected while they develop into adult froghoppers. Comes a time when the froRhoppers seem to sense the passing of the seasons and tiiat the time of egs-laying is at hand. They increase '.heir intake of plant juices and pro duce amounts of froth. Select ing a crotch of a plant stem they whip up a quantity of bubbly froth. All summer long the little creatures were mostly overlooked, but with the construction of the bubble nests they suddenly become conspicuous. The bubble nurseries my be plentifully distributed in extensive weed beds. The spittle-bugs are preparing tor their final act on the earthly stage. Eggs Deposited Inside the bubble-mass a froghopper is busy turning sap into white, frothy blobs that glisten in the sun. Here, in a mass of foam, the eggs are deposited. The froth is whipped up by a circular mo tion of the parent frogliop per's tail. In the mass the insect is .nit of sight of hungry birds. Inside it, protected by its color and its toughness, the young froghopper waits for the time of emergence. While it wait it lives in an ephemeral castle of bubbles a baby spittle-bug. Jennace Freeman Rehearing Asked Salem -HIPD- Attorneys for condemned slayer Jeannace June Freeman, 21,, have asked the Oregon Supreme Court for a rehearing of its decision which affirmed her first de gree murder conviction and death sentence. The petition was submitted by Cash Pcrrine, Bend attor ney. Tuesday was the deadline for submitting such a petition Earlier, Perrine had indi cated a rehearing probably would not be sought. The high court rarely grants them. The court is expected to rule on the request sometime this month. Miss Freeman, sentenced In the gas chamber for throwing a child into the Crooked river gorge last year, is housed in the women's unit of the peni tentiary here since there ar? no facilities for women on death row. If the high court refuses to restudy its decision, its man date will be sent to Jefferson county circuit court where an execution date will be set. The only hope then would be commutation bv Gov. The total was reported last week to the legislative fiscal committee, without a break down. Personal income tax collec tions are up 9.i per cent over last year, and payments of the corporation income and excise taxes are up 10.3 per cent. The commission noted that first payments of the new eastern Oregon severance tax on timber are due on or be fore Oct. 30, for harvesting from July through Septem ber. The commission's quar terly report included the first pavmcnt under the law - S14 - from a small operator who apparently completed his har vesting before the end of the quarter. The breakdown through Sept. 30, with last year's com parison in parenthesis: Personal income tax - S19, 698.144 (S18.046.033). Corporation excise, income - $2,398,046 fS2.175.089). HIPP Dewey Greene, a 21-year-old Negro from Greenwood, Miss., said Monday he has applied for admission to the University of Mississippi.
