Epstein of the Superior Court agreed with the recommendation of the Master In Chancery, Mayer Goldberg, who said that most of the points raised by the plaintiffs were 'trilling mi nutiae which cannot change the obvious and inevitable conclusion presented by the defendants experts; namely that there is a substantial re duction In tooth decay result ing from fluoridation of the domestic water supply to the optimum standard of one pail per million. This conclusion Is fortified by the plaintiffs own experts." The Master In Chancery said that fluoridation is not medication in the generally accepted sense because all that is done is to add to the water the same chemical which ground water naturally contains in a few thousand cities of this land. The final conclusion was that "fluorida tion is a reasonable measure which will have a wholesome effect upon the general public health by accomplishing a substantial reduction of den tal caries." This decision, which was reached by a disinterested judge after reviewing six years of testimony, should go far now to clear up the doubts that some- puzzled people have had in their mind. 1 always say to such people that 1 think they should do what a scientist like me docs, and this is to listen, not so much to violent opponents, but to men like Prof. Fred erick Stare of Harvard, whose business it is to know all the lacls. The other evening I spent much lime with him dis cussing this subject, and he Is strongly in favor of fluorida tion. There are several others of these miserable, nervous diseases that are due to a bad inheritance from some an cestor-diseases such as Hunt ineton's Chorea, cystic fibro sis of the pancreas, cystic kid neys, hemophilia (easy bleed ing), and pernicious anemia In the case of an in-born dis ease, a cure must always be very difficult to tind Decause the child was born with some organ which is poorly built, or some body tissue that is in clined to break down; or some cells so defective that they fail to make some chemical such as insulin, that is essen tial to life. No physician can put in a new pancreas or new kidneys. In the case of diabetes, for tunately, about 1922, two Ca nadian doctors, named Bant ing and Best, learned to ex tract Insulin from the pan creas of animals, and thus this Is why today even diabetic children with the severest form of the disease can usual ly be kept alive. When I was young man, people born with a tendency to pernicious anemia usually soon died; to- day with the help of Vitamin B12 we keep them alive in definitely. Able chemists are now con stantly at work, trying to find out what substance Is lacking n the body of the person who was born with a tendency to some destructive disease of the nervous system. When they find it, we probably will soon get a drug which will at least control the disease, much as diabetes is controlled. A while ago, for example, al most all boys born with a strong tendency to hemophilia bled to death; but today, with the help of recently gained knowledge about blood clot ting, these lads often can be kept alive for years. If I had a disease like Hunt ington's Chorea or Amyo trophic Lateral Sclerosis, I would not want to pass it on to any child of mine; I would not want to have that on my conscience. I get dozens of letters from good women who say that before they knew the danger, they did pass on their weakness to one or two chil dren, and now, because they did this, their mental suffer ing Is almost unbearable. Every time they look at the crippled child,' their con science hurts them. Often I say, "Don't feel that way, be cause no doctor warned you of the danger you would run If you had children."
