Medford, South Salem Clash In Grid Battle Here Tonight "For Coach Marv Healer's Saxons, Friday night could be their moment ot truth when they square off against the highly-touted PearpicKers. So wrote a Capital city sports scribe about the South Salem high football team. The Saxons tonight invade the wind cave of the Mcdford Black Tornado. Kickoff time is 8 p.m. For fans who follow and believe the gridiron polls, it will be a struggle of Ore gon prep titans. For, Mcdford is ranked No. 1 in all three and South Nos. 2 and 4 and 5. One Portland newspaper and a press wire service bill the Medford stadium joust as the feature prep attraction of the week end. The Saxons utilize tne talents of Dave Johnson, Roger Apple gate and Mickey Wright in tiieir ground assault - par ticularly those of Johnson. And, tney have a passing threat in Gary Allen. Medford will counter with its renowned multiple offense with the passing and running of Dan Miles and Mike Neat- hamer, the running of Jack Lowery, Mike Barnes, Mike Watklns, Frank Van Pelt, Tim Murray, and others and the catching of Lloyd Hammons, Gibb Mitchell and Lowery. The schools have put teams against each other on four previous occasions. Medford has been victor by sizable scores. Did Rtit Help? South Salem invades (he Rogue valley metropolis after victories of 20 to 7 over North Salem, 27 to 7 over Klamath Falls and 27 to 6 over Bend. Coach Jones termed it "pretty fair" at Prineville last week." It held up well after a mistake on the first scrimmage play of the game cost a touchdown. Ends Crippled Gale Tepper and Mike Cot ton, a pair of ends, have been slowed by Injuries and may play some against Yreka. But, John Yaple, converted from guard, and John Rhodes, get the starting calls. Tepper pulled a muscle against Red mond two weeks ago and Cot ton suffered an ankle sprain in the Crook County game at Prineville. Yreka will be favored. Shasta of Redding, Calif., de feated Ashland 42 to 7 in a season opener and the Red ding club since has nicked Yreka 20 to 14. The Miners also enter the fracas with the edge in ex perience. Ashland looms as an Im proving team. Jones reported that his halfbacks, Ron Boyce and Don Scholcr, ran better at Prineville last week than in the two previous games. San Jose State has been beaten this year by Utah State, Washington Stale and California. Junior halfback Mel Ren fro, who scored three touch downs against Utah, and sophomore .quarterback Bob Berry will lead the Oregon attack. CONFERENCE PLANNED Philadelphia - (UPD - The Pennsylvania athletic com mission plans a conference with heavyweight champion Sonny Liston soon to aid his rehabilitation, commissio n e r Alfred Klein said today. Doctors at California Lu theran hospital said the 25-year-old Argentine, once re garded a top contender for the heavyweight crown, was showing signs of improve ment and were hopeful he would regain consciousness within several days. Lavorante was knocked out by little known Johnny Rig gins of San Francisco in the Sept. 21 bout at Olympic Au- I ditorium.
