OREGON Oregon Projects Deleted From Bill Washington -itJPIl- Planning funds for a 40-foot Columbia River channel and funds to ttart work on two other Ore gon projects were knocked out of the public works bill by a House-Senate conference committee Thursday. This means a delay of at least a year in the already authorized Columbia River project. A "Sum of $100,000 in planning funds had been re quested. Also knocked out in the conference were $500,000 lo start construction on the Blue River Reservoir project in Lane county and $200,000 for the construction on Vaquina Bay jetty project in Lincoln county. However, $100,000 for panning was allowed on the Yaquina project. The committee approved $9,079,000 for Cougar Reser voir and $100,000 for Wil- I lamette River Basin study. The Agriculture Depart ment said that marketing cf broilers will begin to increase late this year. The result will be a drop in prices. The department said prices late this year and early in 1963 are likely to be substan-. tially below the lewis for the same period a year ago. Costs Going Up While prices for broile-s are falling, producers are probably going to find their costs going up. An Agriculture Department report on the poultry and eg? situation noted that the co.it of baby broiler chicKi already has risen in recent weeks. And it said that some tu -trier in creases are likely. This forecast of lowt-'r chick en prices coupled wii higher costs is apparently the result of a spring and summer of good broiler prices. From lat May through mid-September, broiler prices have rren rela tively good far above last year's depressed levels. As a remit, many producers owe again seem willing lo increase production. It is called "knocking the monument. wen and the fun comes in thinking up jocular ways to describe the proposed design for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. All that is needed to partici pate is to know that the de sign envisions an abstract ar rangement of towering con crete slabs. What I regard as the sport's finest hour came this week when the House of Represen tatives voted to send the de sign back to the memorial commission for revision. Preparatory to the en gagement, some of the con gressmen took batting prac tice on a bill to authorise $10 million for construction of a national aquarium in the capital. Rep. H. R. Gross (R-Iowa), described the projected aquar ium as a "platinum-lined fish bowl," a "gilt-edged fish bowl," a "glorified bath tub for fish." He suggested that rather than blow $10 million on a piscatorial container, House members should stock their new swimming pool with crea tures of the fiecp. The House passed the aquarium bill anyway, but it got everyone warmed up for monument kitocking when the time came lo consider the FDR Memorial design. "It is like a modern feed ing lot with windbreaks on all sides," commented Rep. Nearl Smith, (D-Iowa). "Ot ersized bookendi," said Rep. Paul F. Schenk (R-Ohio). "An nt's eye view of a cemetery, contributed Rep. Harold M. Ryan (D-Mich), vho alio likened it to a "handball court." And so it we-nt. One proposed solution is to convert the site reserved for the monument into a "living" memorial, such as a formal garden or a tourist center. Or, adopting Gross' plan, they could put fish in the new congressional swimming pool and call it "The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Aquarium." 'Pressure' Seen in Stockpile Contract Washington - UIPII - A gov ernment accountant agreed Thursday that the "abrupt" signing of nickel stockpile contracts with George M. Humphrey's mining compa nies justified an inference that "extreme pressure" was applied to government nego tiators. But the accountant, Louis Brooks, said he knew of no such pressure-or other irregu larity - in negotiations for contracts with the former treasury secretary's Hanna Mining Co. Brooks, a deputy director in the General Services Admin istration, said at the opening of a new round of Senate hear ings that he hesitated to char acterize as improper the ab sence of right-to-audit clauses in the contracts. I have an uneasy feel ing that she's planning a week in Lakewood, too. If she Is, then my place would be right along at my husband's side, as in the past 37 years. His sudden insistence on going alone this time makes me wonder what's up. ... Mr. K. F. - This Is a free country and I can't tell our lady neighbor when and where to spend her free time. If she should wind up in Lakewood at the same time I'm there, I can't help it. Bertha should accept it as a coincidence. From my point of view, my idea of going alone is to find out just how dependent I am on Bertha, and whether I can pack, unpack, eat right, make friends and find things to do, on my own. I've seen other happily married men spend a week at a resort alone, while their wives were elsewhere - on long trips to Europe or visiting relatives. After all these years of lean ing on Bertha, I'm curious to see whether I can navigate alone. Her suspicions are ridicu lous. I love Bertha dearly, and she knows it. ... The Council - Since it's a free country for this free wheeling widow, it's a free country for Mr. F., too. Free enough for him to quietly change' his plans and either go to Lakewood before or aft er the lady, or vacation some where else. It's asking a lot of a wife of 37 years, not only to stay home but to be equan imical about a husband alone at a resort at which an at tractive lady-friend on the loose has checked in at the same time. Separate vacations in the course of a long, solid mar riage, are often a good idea. For some couples they con stitute the pause that refresh es. A few days apart and they can see each other with new and eager eyes. Conversely, a marriage is in a bad way when one mate stays close to the other because of dis trust. Sorry indeed is a va cation where Mrs. F. comes along, not because she likes the gardenspot destination, not because of the swimming and the cuisine, but to keep an eye on Mr. F. The sine qua non of the separate vacation is, of course, complete faith in each other. Here we have an instance of incomplete faith, possibly with good cause. And even if Mr. F. can allay his wife's 'misgivings as to his attitude toward the female neighbor living alone, he can't quiet her suspicions as to the lat ter's motives if she turns up at the same Lakewood hotel during the same week as Mr. F.
