nedy urging him to cut off
all appropriations to the state
of Mississippi except basic
subsistence welfare payments.
Hatfield had said Thursday
the only alternative to mili
tary action in the James
Meredith case was to cut off
all federal money going into
the state, including such items
as funds to run the U. S. pos
tal service and similar gov
ernment services,
