Mark ( Hatfield aayi there was great new market potential for lumber in school construc tion. ! He said lumbermen had cited savings of as much as $200,000 on a single school building in the Northwest when wood was used instead of other materials. 1 Hatfield said wood "has not been fully exploited by Ore gon school authorities. Wood structures today are safe, dur able, beautiful and economic al" The governor, speaking to a Chamber of Commerce group, said "we cannot overlook the great new market for Oregon forest products throughout the nation, if we can provide the prototype school structures of the future." Hatfield also said the threat of Canadian import competi tion remains and that it was a matter which coum De re solved by presidential action. "All forecasts point to an increasing need for wood to provide hemes . . .," he said. "If currenc import difficulties can be resolved, Oregon's tim ber industry has a very bright future." Shirra is scheduled to attempt six orbits of the earth in his spacecraft, Sigma 7. tUPI) Medford Students Join Concert Band Portland - Mary Milne and Lynn Peterson, both freshmen from Medford, have been ac cepted as members of the Lewis and Clark college con cert band which will begin its season with a program sched uled during homecoming In November. Future concerts include a a Christmas Concert and a five-day tour of Oregon in January between semesters. Miss Milne was a member of the Medford High school band and orchestra, Spanish club and the rally squad. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Milne, 2824 Country Club dr. Miss Peterson received a master musician's key from Medford High school and was active in Latin club, Interna tional Relations League and Hospital club. Menconi isn't functioning as Police Com missioner at this bustling town, a suburb of New York City, he's hard at work as one of the nation's top portrait sculptors. Menconi, a much-decorated veteran of World War II who was graduated from Yale as a hachrlor of fine arts in 13:t9, has won many commis sions, including the author ized Alaskan Statehood med al, sculptures of labor leaders Samuel Gompcrs. William Green and Philip Murray for the AFL-CIO, and official medals and tablets for the Pittsburgh bi-ccntennial. New York Historical society, the San Juan, Puerto Rico, air port, the South Bend, Ind , public library and the Specr library at Princeton univer sity. lie says the work relaxes him from the pressures of his duties as police commissioner and member of the town trustees. Mcnconi's latest commis sion is designing and sculp turing three series of high re lief, finely carved commemo rative historical medals. One set features the 34 prcsidcnls of the United Stales. Another honors each of the 50 slates and the third celebrates the SR individual signers of the Declaration of Independence in all, about 140 individual medals. "Even if I do one a month," Menconi estimated. "I won't be finished for the next 11 years." Kennedy First The first of these comme morative medals, already highly prized by collectors, was that of President Ken nedy. When, shortly after his inauguration, the President went to Paris, for conferences with President DcGanlle and on to Vienna for a meeting with Premier Khrushchev, he took with liim more than 1,000 of the commemorative discs to present as souvenirs Cast in bronze, silver and platinum, the medals are l's inches in diameter, or dignity larger than a 50-cent piece. In Ihe iale series, (he his torical societies ol the various states pick the individual to be represented on the face of each medal. The slate seal is on Ihe hack. For the signers of the Declaration of Inde pendence series, each medal bears a full bust of one of the signers. The reverse side por trays a reproduction of the signature. Before starting his bas-relief sculpture of any portrait in the scries, Menconi flies to Englewood, Ohio, to confer with technicians at the Presi dential Art medals company, which casts the medals. After a pose is agreed upon, Men coni returns to his Plcasant ville studio, only a few blocks from his Police Commission er's office in city hall. Clay Beginning "I start first with clay," he said. "The original is 10 inches in diameter, or a little more than half normal head size. Once this sculpture is finished a job that usually tHkcs up to three weeks it is made into a plaster model which is sharpened and mold- ! ed into bronze. Then a panto graph is used to reduce tiie , mold to its proper dimensions for the medal and a dye is j cut.
