(UPI) School News Plans for the new year' were discussed and awards presented during the recent meeting of the Cub Scout Pack 41 in the Griffin Creek Grange. A new trophy made by Mrs. Iva Harper was shown. The den with the largest attend ance will keep it for the month. First winner was Den 1 with Mrs. D. G. McDougall as den mother. A ribbon for the best dis play work was won by Den 2 with Mrs. Ross Plankcnhorn as den mother. The group dis played models of space rock ets. Miss Kathy Haerlle was recognized for the help she gave the pack for two years. Cub Scout Pack 6 Several awards were pre sented during a recent meet ing of Cub Scout Pack 6 at the Washington school. Receiving bobcat awards were Christopher Halzi, Gary Lee McKnighl, John Stude baker, Terry Lee Shcpard, David Alsbrook. Wolf awards were present ed to Everett Ballard, Michael Myers and Ricky Schoonover. Ricky Schoonover and Everett Ballard received gold arrows. Johnny Great, Rick Steavens, Eddie Bittle and Everett Bal lard received silver arrows. A bear award was present ed to Ralph Smith, and a sil ver arrow to Myron Gaston. Greg Martin and Myron Gaston received the lion award, and a silver arrow was presented to Robert Rieche. Assistant denncr stripes were given to Leland Morris, Ricky Schoonover, Ritchy Pope and Kelly Uchylil. Den ncr stripes were given to Ronald Morris, Johnny Great, Ricky Schoonover and Mitch Gibson. Inducted into Webelos were Louis Melgcr and Darrell Coulter. DeWayne Butler was pro moted to Tenderfoot Scout In a ceremony conducted by Scoutmaster Robert Price. He received a neck scarf by mem bers of Troop 13, Presbyterian church. Den 8 received the "Toughie" award for flag presentation. Cubmaster Myron Gaston introduced two new den mothers, Mrs. Melvin Rcnnick, Den 5; and Mrs. Rollie Pean, Den 8. Den 1 won the "C u b b i e" attendance award for the second time. Mrs. H. E. Bittle is den mother. Influenza Cases in County Rise in Week The number of influenza cases in Jackson county in creased slightly last week, ac cording to Dr. A. Erin Mcrkel, Jackson county public health j officer. Medford reported five flu cases and Ashland three dur ing the week ending Sept. 28. Medford reported two cases of German measles. Ashland reported one case. Two cases of gonorrhea were reported in the county. Drinkwaler is shown holding the Morse historic message. (UPI) LJa Baby Porpoise Seldom Survives In Aquarium Newspaper headlines reads: "Italian Aquarium Loses Por poise." Within the last couple of decades, and for the first time, man has been able to study the habits and person alities of the aquatic animal the ancient Greeks thought looked so pig-like they named it a "porpoise." ... Our association with this animal has revealed some startling facts. Seldom does a week pass but what the press carries a news story of some peculiar, or amazing action on the part of these highly in telligent animals. In many countries, as well as our own, the porpoise is being placed on exhibition. Admiring crowds peer through glass portholes, in man-made miniature little "oceans" called aquariums, at the actions and antics of these little brothers of the whales. To have a baby purpoise born within the walls of one of these concrete and glass seas,' is an event widely pub licized. To raise one of these babies to adulthood, under conditions present in this un-porpoise-like environment, is close to being a miracle; it is seldom accomplished. Seldom Survives Even with the very best of care, and under constant at tention by interested attend ants, the baby porpoise sel dom survives. As frequently happens, the human factor, trying to understand porpoise nature, attributes the young ster's death to parental care lessness, or outright murder on the part of the male por poise. Papa Porpoise is as fond of his offspring as is a human parent. There would seem to be other, and less obvious rea sons why the baby seldom lives to become an adult, when in captivity. Future studies may reveal the real answer. Observing the porpoise In its natural environment, the sea, observers have noticed a condition that always seemed to be present but is difficult to explain or understand. Could it possibly be that i there is a highly organized society in the relationship of all the members of a porpoise herd? With animals as intelli gent as the porpoise, such a condition is possible. In spite of the very few baby porpoises so far raised in captivity, they continue to be "little strangers in our i midst."
