St. Mary's Tussles Phoenix In Saturday Rogue Loop Mix Rays of the Rogue league football spotlight split three ways today and tonight. On Saturday all will focus on the Medford High school stadium. Phoenix and St. Mary's of Medford are Saturday night's gridiron foes. Each seeks its second victory in the Class A-2 school circuit. The Pirates of Phoenix ' enter battle as league and state titular defend ers and St. Mary's as a top contender in the loop. ' Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ; : Both aggregations are crowd leasers Phoenix with a brand of power football that carried it to an Oregon Class A2 crown in 1961 and St. Mary's with a wide open style of ball with much reliance placed on speed. Bues Favored " : The Buccaneers rale as fa vorites on the strength of ex perience, size and opinion in 'the polls. With big men who move well, they have good speed and they are capable of Jong gain lightning strike. Against Rogue River last week Phoenix showed it can utilize a diversified attack. St. Mary's is expected to place more dependence than ils rival on its air offense. For the Crusaders have a top thrower in three-year veteran quarterback Jim Calhoun. His niain targets could be ends .Pete Naumes and Ron Rob erts. The Medford parochials will have the running, too, of Calhoun, Tom and Tim Dar land, Jim Webb and Marv Mc Gee with McGee expected to see his first offensive duty of the season. 1 ; Phoenix has the ground as saults of Jim Consbruck, Dave .Jlohnson and Dennis Grennan ith Ron Williams a capable quarterback in the single wing and T. Phoenix whipped Oakland 33 to 7 in a non counter and Rogue River 55 to 0 in the circuit. : Last year Phoenix nosed St. Mary's 25 to 21 in the Rogue loop spellbinder of the season. Grants Pass is at Marsh field tonight and South Salem is at Bend Saturday in the week end's top Oregon high school football games. Grants Pass, undefeated in two starts this season includ ing an opening season victory over defending stale cham pion Roseburg, hasn't beaten Marrhfield since 1951. Medford, which rolled up an impressive win against Marshfield last week end, is idle. In other lop games tonight, Washington is at Jefferson, Beaverton is at David Doug las, Milwaukie plays host to Central Catholic, The Dalles is at Pendleton, Parkrose is at Jesuit, Klamath Falls is al home against Corvallis, North Eugene is at Roseburg and Cottage Grove is at South Eu gene. Rogue River Sacred Heart Rogue River Mike O'Brien has been shifted from tackle to fullback this week as Coach Wayne Misener sought to strengthen his Rogue River high school football backfield for its Rogue league game to night with the Sacred Heart Trojans. The fracas will be at 8 p.m. at Rogue River. Misener reported that the Chiefs have been working on offense and coaches sought to gel the kids who can move the ball. O'Brien played some at fullback last year. The coach said that O'Brien is one of his better linemen and the shift is being made at some sacri- MH Harrier Team Wins Medford High school cross country team nosed Grants Pass 27 to 28 yesterday at Grants Pass. Cliff Lyons, Grants Pass, was the individual winner. He toured the 1.8 miles in fast early season time of 8:55. Medford's Dennis Brum back was second. Jim De Courcey, GP, took third. Greg Swanson, John Gilbertson and Duane Mallams. all of Medford, were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Grants Pass Harriers Rod Waterman, Guy Roberts and Dave Pittock were seventh, eighth and ninth. Don Kengla, Medford, was 10th. Coach Bob Huff, who has a squad of 15 Medford run ners, took 10 to Grants Pass. Of the group Brumback and Don Kengla are lettermen. Medford's runners will go to Ashland next Friday, Oct. 5. ' Ashlanders Contend at Redmond Ashland - A flanker back moved up from the junior varsity may get starting call tonight when the Ashli nd high varsity football team op poses Crook County at Prine ville. He is Roger Atherton whose running and pass catching abilities caught the attention of varsity mentor Marsh Jones in the jayvee game with Medford. Atherton caught passes for both Ashland TDs. Jones said this morning, however, that he was unde cided on whether to start Ath erton or Mike Torreson. Ashland drills this week have emphasized defense and Jones reported that the Grizz lies were "shaping up pretty good" Bruin scouts have reported that Crook County appears a bit stronger than the Red mond club which beat Ash land last week. There are old er boys who are aggressive. Jones reported that Jo'in Rhodes may get the call at one starting end in place of Gale Tepper. Tepper pulled a muscle in the Redmond mix and the coach feels he is not quite ready for action. Other possible starters are Mike Cotton, end; Don Soren son and Bill Jury, tackles; Jack Gruber and Jim Conk- lin, guard; Jim Smith, center; Howard Johnson, quarter back; Ron Boyce, left half back, and Don Scholer, right half. Dick Ragsdale Injures Ankle Dick Ragsdale, sophomore quarterback from Medford, will miss Stanford university's home football opener against Michigan State this Saturday. Ragsdale, who started on defense for the Indians when they defeated Tulane 6 to 3 last Friday night, suffered an ankle sprain. The injury came on about Ihe 10th play of the game. Encounters Tonight fice to tlie line to bolster the backfield. The tackle spol will be fil led by Bob Stiehl. He turned out late but has been coming along. He is tough and is look ing good in drills. Stiehl has seen defensive service this season. Quarterback is a question spot this week. Frank Palmer ton, a senior, has the exper ience at the spot but has a bad ankle. Misener may call on sophomore Jim LeRoy. Elsewhere in the offensive lineup tonight it may be Don Salyer and Gust Schefstrom, ends; Bill Cooper, tackle; Vic Low and Bob Pentecost, guards; Bob Clark, center; Jack Sailers, left half; and Alan Gates, right half. On de fense Larry Craig will replace Clark and go to a tackle post. Still out of action is Tom Wright, left halfback who hurt his knee in practice be fore the opening game. Steelhead Luck Reported Good At Happy Camp Happy Camp, Calif.-A real good week end for steelhead fishermen is predicted on the Klamath river in this area. Good angling was reported yesterday with four to six pound fish being caught. One 7'ii-pounder was reported. USC upset a highly-regarded Duke team, 14-7, last week and has been pegged an 11 point choice over the Mus tangs, But Stanford faces a much tougher row. The In dians downed Tulane, 6-3, in the New Orleans heat and now faces a Michigan State squad that could be Rose Bowl bound. Coach Duffy Daugherty's Spartans have been made 13V4 point selections for their season opener that brings to gether two massive lines. UCLA is Idle UCLA still has a week to go before it launches its cam paign. But there are plenty of other key games on top. They include Illinois at Wash ington, Washington State at Wyoming, Utah at Oregon, Oregon State at Iowa and San Jose State at California. Daugherty has labeled his Michigan State team as "pep py and in good shape" for the Indians who may have found a good running back al last in J. D. Lodato. The latter got off a 30-yard touchdown run to beat Tulane. Southern California used "red," "green" and "gold" squads while knocking off Duke and Coach John McKay, after viewing the game films, will stay with them. He also will be going with Willie Brown, his fast halfback, who showed well against the Blue Devils. Halfback Charlie Mitchell, an established star al Washing ton, may not start when the favored Huskies meet the II lino. Coach Jim Owens moved Nat Whitmeyer up ahead of the veteran Mitchell as a re sult of the former's play against Purdue. Washington State, which bombed San Jose State 49-8 last Saturday, takes on a Wyo ming team that' lost to New Mexico by four points last week. Oregon, which put up a great battle before losing 25-13 to Texas last week, is rated a one touchdown favor ite. But the Ducks also were favored last season when Utah beat them 14-6 at Salt Lake City. Saturday. s Canyonville Defeats BF Butte Falls A big, rangy Canyonville high aggregation, deep in talent, defeated Butte Falls at Canyonville Thursday in an eight-man football game. Score was 64 to 13. Canyon ville was leader by 56 to 13 at the half. Butte Falls louchdowned on a Neal Ellis to Jim McCono chie pass and on an Ellis roll out run. An Ellis lo Dan Ed mondson pass converted once. Butte Falls has an open dale next week. The Loggers play at Camas Valley on Oct. 12. M 3 5th and Riverside Hedrick Rebounds To Subdue Crater 9th in Football 29-6 Hedrick Junior High school ninth grade spotted the Crater freshmen a touchdown at the outset of the game then came back to dominate the Comets 29 to 6 in football action here yesterday afternoon. Randy Spaur louchdowned three times for the Hornets, rambling more than half the length of the field for two scores. Halftime favored the Med ford club 21 to 6. Spaur's touchdown jaunts were for 52, 0 and 59-yard jaunts. A Bruce Bertrand to Ken Tropple aerial gained 17 yards and a score. Ron Schwinler, Spaur and Bill Col lins ran for extra points. A safety rounded out the score. Joe Thomas tabulated for the Comets. Crater tallied on the second scrimmage play of the game. The Comets had kicked off to Hedrick. On the Hornets' first play, Schwinler fumbled and Gary Schwab recovered for the Central Point crew on the 11-yard line. Thomas bombed through on the next play to score. Spaur Goes 52 On the third scrimmage ef fort after the second Comet bootoff the Hornets produced a score. Hedrick moved out from its 28 yard line as Trop ple made 16 yards and Schwlndler four. Then Spaur was busted through the mid dle al the Hedrick 48 and went all the way to score. Schwinler's conversion run put Hedrick ahead for keeps. Crater moved the ball out to its 45 where a Schwab punt was blocked by Hcdrick's Leonard Howe. Hedrick moved to the Comet 13 helped by a couple of penalties then, itself, was assessed a five yarder and put back on the 18. Tropple went around end to the Crater two but fumbled and Gerald Branch recovered for the visitors. The Comets fought out lo the 11 and Schwab punted and Hedrick took over on Crater's 46. Tropple went 36 yards around end to the 10. Spaur gained to the nine then round ed end to the goal. Dorsey Recovers Crater threw back the next Hornet bid but Terry Dorsey recovered for the Mcdfords on Charles Grady's fumble. That gave Hedrick possession on the Comet 16. Bertrand, try ing to pass, was tossed for a three-yard setback. Collins gained back two. Then Ber trand pitched to Tropple for marker No. 3. Hedrick scored in- the sec ond half on its first time with the ball. The Hornets got the pigskin in their hands on their 38 after a punt by Schwab. Tropple cracked to the 41. Spaur took the ball on a re verse,' popped through the right side of the line and was on his way, managing lo elude the Comets, although It seemed almost certain he would be caught.
