MEDFORD, OREGON Manor-Isms By ETHEIYN IVANS Our valley churches have resumed taking turni in con ducting Sunday evening ves per services in our audi torium. Each church provides a speaker and often addition al music. Our Manor now has its own vesper choir 15 to 20 singers organized and led by A. Ray Neptune, Burlin game, and Ralph Moore, Grants Pass. Both of these leaders often lake solo parts and also sing duets. Mrs. Francis Olds, Medford, sings the soprano solos. Mrs. Olds is also a member of t!v Senior choir at St. Marks Episcopal church. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. West, Riverside, Calif., were Med ford (but not Manor guests , of J. Earl Collins, who came into the Manor from Medford. Mr. West was president of the California Electric Power company at the time Mr. Col lins was vice-president of the : same company. The Wests were enroute to the Seattle Fair and Victoria, B.C. and took Mrs. Stephen Hayes, Grand Isle, Neb., and Mr. Collins along with them for the week. My husband and I have re ! turned from a wonderful trip up the Coast from Crescent City, Calif., north to Ocean ; like, Ore. Oregon, our adopt ed slate, has been kinder to us this year weatherwlse; the weather on this trip was . perfect all the time. There is really spectacular ocean scenery along this ; route; and we enjoyed driv ing through the green and wooded Memorial sections and the national forests. Ore gon is to be cangratulatcd ' upon the numerous state parks. These with Forest serv ice camps and picnic grounds, make the coast trip an out-of-door recreational joy, We slopped overnight at the Adobe at Yachats a very, very attractive place and al Surftidcs in Ocean- lake. We spent hours on the wide, sandy beach at Surf tidcs, even stayed up late to walk at the water's edge in the moonight. The fresh sea food there was worth writing home about or to the Mail Tribune. Surftidcs seemed to be popular with a varied crowd of people, from the smartly dressed, attractive ; pleasure seekers from Port ' land, Salem, etc., to a large convention of clergymen and : church laymen, also from Portland vicinity churches I found none listed from Medford. This conference was sponsored by the Oregon Slate System of Higher Edu cation and the Clergy Econo mic Education foundation. The real purpose of this "Talc of a Trip" is to call at tention once again to the many recreation opportuni ties within a one day or less than a one day drive from Medford. Our valley seems to be the center of recreation areas. . As we had hoped, listing musical Instruments owned by our Manor members has resulted In the discovery of additional ones. Mrs. Howard Mann has found another har monica, two toolllng horns, and Mrs. Charles Cooley brought her piano-accordlon from her Grants Pass home and expertly Joined our last patio musical, Also, we find thai Mrs. Robert T. Bridge, Obcrlinc, Texas, is the owner of a wonderful, old violin. Made In Gcdmany in 1716, It has been in Mrs. Bridge's family more than 65 years. We are told it has a lovely, singing lone. Mrs. Bridge no longer plays, but she has pro mised to let Lynn Sjolund, local music supervisor of j Medford High school, to play : it for us. The Rev. and Mrs. Eric 0. ' Ttobathan, retired, who for merly lived in Central Point, have returned from a month j long vacation, visiting a son I In Redding, Calif. The Rev. ! Mr. Robathan returned just ' in lime to lake an active part i In the Episcopal Glcricus mceling held in the Manor. Rcames Chapter Slates Meeting Rramcs chapter, Order of the Eastern Star will hold a slated meeting Thursday, Sep. tember 27. at the Masonic temple. Mrs. Gene Dyke, worthy matron, and Ross Gil kison, worthy patron, will preside. Chairman for the evening will be Mrs. Jennie B. Crca gcr and Mrs. Ralph Krows.
