M.r;5"uITerrific Game Anticipated As Tornado Hosts Pirates . .. ... . Ring Title Bout Chicago - am - Chairman Joseph Triner of the Illinois state athletic commission an-j nounced a "long count" today i for the Floyd Patterson-Sonny I Liston heavyweight title fight ' Tuesday night. ' i And that tricky count could , be the cause of a hassle remi- i niscent of the historic Gene TunneyJacX Dempsey "long count" controversy, which ex ploded in Chicago 35 years ago Saturday night-Sept. 22, 1927. Triner's. announcement dealt with what happens if either champion Patterson or chal lenger Liston is belted out of the rintfand off the ring-apron into the press scats. The fact that the ousted fighter must climb back into the ring within 20 seconds or be counted out is not exactly new. But the following com mission edict is brand new. If the ousted boxer climbs back into the ring before the count reaches 18, he must take a mandatory count on his feet until the count does reach 18. Medford will have the quar terbacking and throwing of Dan Miles and Mike Neat hamer, the running of Jack Lowery, Mike Barnes, Frank Van Pelt and others. And Lloyd Hammons and Gibb Mitchell could be on the re ceiving end of aerial tries. Medford, which has beaten Marshficld on every outing since 1957, will try for its seventh straight victory over the Pirates from the coast. The Tornado also will aim for its 20th win in 32 games with the Coos Bay school. While Medford has taken 19 of the 31 past contests, Marshfield has nabbed 10. Two games have been tied. Medford nosed the Bucs by 13 to 7 last fall. Tonight's encounter brings together two of Oregon's top rated A-l preps. And, Marsh field is the favorite, going by the polls. The Bucs have been rated No. 2 and tied for No. 1 Voting has put Medford, vic tor at The Dalles last week, at No. 3 and No. 5. Dick Fishback in his Coos Bay World "Flashbacks col umn said, ". . . the Marshfield Medford clash shapes up as a hard-nose, power football struggle." He added a sen tence the Tornado could take for a warning: "Don't forget that improved Pirate passing attack, though." Student cheering sections tonight, for the first time at Medford high games, will be in the east side grandstand built in 1947. Grade school youngsters will sit in a section at the north end of the old stand Next to them will be an area for junior high boys and girls. Then there is the Medford high school section. South of it will be space for the visit ing students. A general ad mission section is on the ex treme south end of the old stand. General admission sections are at each end of the new grandstand.
