Joan B. - We have a 10-year-old son who claims he's In love with the whole ani mal kingdom. But if love means "caring for", he can't really mean it. Because we believed him, we bought him a turtle, some white mice, and a cocker spaniel puppy. I have two other children and now that the baby is on her feet, I thought I'd be able to resume my piano lessons and catch up with other post poned projects. All I waited for was to get my hands out of the diaper pail, so that I could get nice manicures and stay presentable. But now, after the diapers, come cages to clean, fish bowls to change, and a muddy puppy to wipe up after. Marc promised to take care of his pets himself. I knew I'd have to help, but I have no desire to do the whole job. I'm not that fond of them. I'm ready to give them away if he doesn't take over. Bella V. - I'm Marc's aunt, Joan's sister-in-law. My heart goes out to Marc because of his mother's distaste for his pets. He's only a child and, naturally, he forgets a feeding once in a while or he lets the dog in too soon. Joan should feel that the creatures are hers, too, not just Marc's. And she shouldn't threaten that she'll give them away if he doesn't take 100 per cent charge of them. Marc and the other children adore the pets. uur own daugnter is an only child, and we tried to make sure she'd never be lonely. She has an Irish setter, a rabbit, hamsters, tropical fish and parakeets. Even though I care for them most of the time, our child helps, and I enjoy seeing her happi ness. If the problem involves lack of space, a letter will be signed, "Mother of six in five rooms and always a dog, now two dogs." If it's a question of parental distaste, we hear from animal lovers who decry adult selfishness. "A little dog can build a big love," wrote one reader. "A child has only a few precious years to grow up. It's your privilege to give him all the wonderful mem ories you can." No argument here. We'll confine our remarks to assess ing what would be a fair de mand for Joan to make of Marc (something under 100 per cent responsibility) so that he can keep his pets and she, her wits. (And in the i spirit of things - could - be worse, we can tell Joan to be 1 glad Marc hasn't entered the Please - get - me-a-horse stage! Then comes riding equipment, board and feed, blacksmiths and vets.) i Pets play several roles in a child's life. They make him feel mighty impor tant. And the price of all that must be work. Yes, pets mean responsibility. We would re mind Aunt Bella that Marc can't simply claim the fun of having pets, and leave the "dirty work" to his mother On the other hand, we'd be seech Joan not to expect seriously that a 10 -year -old will heed every line of the Manual of Instructions every dayl We suggest that she work out a fair division - of - labor clause, with Marc carrying the giant share (cage-cleaning, water-changing, dog - walking), but Mom seeing that the pa tient animals are fed.
