To what extent have mod ern medicine, better nutrition and improved living stand ards added to his span of life? A new report by the U. S. Public Health Service and statistics from insurance com panies show that life expec tancy is on the rise locally and in most other parts of the country. The average baby born to day will live to age 70.2 years, even if there were to be no further progress in medical science during his lifetime. Two Years Longer That is 2.0 years longer than his expectancy would have been, had he been born a mere 10 years ago. Those who are 25 years old at present will live to age 73.1, on the average, an in crease of 1.4 years, and those who are 40, to age 74.1 which is 1.2 years more than be fore. The size of the bonus, in the form of added years of life, is different at differeni age levels. In Jackson county, accord ing to the latest Census fig ures, the median age of the population is 3 1.8 years, which is somewhat higher than the mean age national ly, 29.5 years. Local Age Level At the local age level, the figures show, the dividend is 1.3 years of added expectancy per person. The increase is greater than that for people who are below the median age and somewhat smaller for those who are above it. The average dividend, ap plied to the entire population of Jackson county, adds up to a total of 96.151 years of extended life for the commu nity as a whole. Compared with other de cades, the recent achieve ments in this direction have been relatively small. In the 1940-1950 period, the gain in life expectancy was twice as great and, in the decade be fore that, still greater. These earner accomplish ments, it is explained, reflect the dramatic strides that were made in controlling the infectious diseases. Further advances in lon gevity will depend on the suc cess of efforts to cope with the chronic diseases. A vast amount of research is being centered in that direction. 'Unit May Be Named For Charles McNary Sen. Wayne Morse of Ore gon has asked Interior Secre tary Stewart L. Udall to designate one of the O and C managament units as the Sen. Charles McNary forest. Morse made the suggestion in connection with commem oration of the 25th anniver sary of the O and C Sustained Yield act. He pointed out that the late Senator McNary of Oregon was instrumental in securing the passage of that law, and that he left his im print on other legislation re lating to reforestation, fire protection, forest manage ment, and sutained yield. "I know that this action on your part." he wrote Udall, "would serve as an inspira tion throughout the years to those who benefit from Char les McNary's devotion to wise forest use and would create a safeguard for the principles for which he stood."
