The overall plan had been reviewed by the commission's subdivision committee in Feb ruary, but the committee's ap proval of the road plan had not been included in the com mission's minutes. The county court and the county engineer's office had requested commission's ap proval prior to action on streets in the subdivision. Gerald Latham, commission secretary, who presided at the meeting in the absence of the president and vice president, pointed out that the subdivis ion lots are in excess of five acres so it Is outside of the scope of the county subdivis ion ordinance. The commis sion has the authority only to review the overall road plan to see if roads are con sidered to be good planning. Oppoi Two Streets Commissioner Edd Roun- tree strongly opposed the placement of two streets since they did not line up with ex isting or planned roads. It was pointed out that the jogs in the roads shown on the map were at least one block in length and that the straight sections were in excess of one mile. Rountree charged that it was very poor planning when roads are put in helter- skelter," adding the1 in the future an urban renewal loan will be needed to correct "slum." The commission approved the road plan with Rountree voting against the plan. Opposes Variance Request Rountree also opposed a variance request by Mrs. Leona Robertson to erect bill board advertising signs in the South Talent zoned area. The billboards, two new and one to be enlarged, are at the intersection of Highway 99 and the old Pacific high way south of Talent. The commission approved the request on the condition that the signs be maintained. Also approved was a re quest by Mr. and Mrs. James J. Backen for a kindergarten n a residence on Upton rd. in the North Central Point zon ing area. No objections were received concerning the vari ance request. Prior to the close of the evening G. I. Peoples, com missioner, commented on the present subdi ision ordinance which requires that each be named. He listed the numer ous duplications of name with in the various county com munities and noted the com plications of giving long names in deed descriptions. ne recommended the use of numbers. Latham suggest- ed that Jhe matter be checked as to what legally would be needed to make such change. Duncan Stresses Democrats for All Roseburg Robert B.
