New York - (I'Pll - A study by Tax Foundation, Inc., on I e d e r a 1 domestic spending programs in a 16 year span said that direct government spending benefitting business was estimated at 307 per cent more in 1962 than in 1954. The figures were contained in a review on the growth of govern m e n t spending pro grams. It said budget spend ing for all civil benefits will total an estimated $26 bil lion in fiscal 1963, up 126 per cent from 1964. Private Organiiation Tax Foundation, Inc., is a private non-profit organiza tion which is engaged on gov ernment spending and tax ation. It says its purpose is to aid in developing a more efficient government at less cost to the citizen and tax- It estimated direct expendi tures benefiting business at 9 7R hillions in 1962, com pared with $679 millions in ; 1954. It broke these down into , four major categories. Fori 1962, these were air transpor- j tation, 718 million; water . transportation, $645 million; postal service, S853 million; and all other, $545 million. The study said that the ex- ! penditures classified under commerce covered "activities of general assistance to busi- j ness, such as air and water j transnnrtation. airport con- struction, highways, and the costs of the post office de partment not covered by pos tal receipts. Small business receives specific aids in ad dition to general benefits." Trust Fund Excluded It specified that the funds listed as of benefit to business did not include expenditures from the federal highway trust fund, which was estab lished July 1, 1957, to cover federal highway aid to the states. Continuation of high way aids in the budget, the Tax Foundation said, would have put 1962 expenditures at $5.9 billion rather than $2.9 billion; eliminating them from the budget in earlier years would make the $2.9 billion for 1962 companies to an expenditure of $697 mil lion for 1954. Housewives Save Money By Using Convenience Food Washington - (UP11 - An Ag riculture department study shows that the housewife saves money by using some of the convenience foods. These are foods that undergo, prior to retailing, some prepa ration ordinarily done in the home. Some of the convenience foods that are cheaper than j comparable home prepared items are concentrated orange Juice, canned chicken chow mein, instant coffee, frozen lima beans, canned orange juice, spaghetti, cherries, and devil's food cake mix. Total Bill Smaller Department researchers said that of 158 items studied, 42 were less expensive and I 116 were more expensive than their home - prepared counterparts. The department 1 said the typical housewife buys enough of the money saving items so that her total : food bill is smaller than if she bought only fresh items to be prepared in her own , kitchen. The study showed that for each $100 spent in grocery stores for food. $14.03 was spent for convenience foods. About two-thirds of the con venience items in the study were bought in very small ; amounts. Less than 5 cents per $10 was spent for each of 102 of the items such as grapefruit sections, canned rice, crabmeat, raspberries, and chicken fricassee. 747,400 Holding Jobs in Oregon Salem -dTfi- State Employ ment Commissioner David H.
