SEPTEMBER S. 1982 A 5 ESS EE3 ES3 EL5I Oregon State To Start 95th Year; 10,000 Expected Corvallis - Oregon State university will begin its 95th academic year this month with a record enrollment of almost 10,000 forecast. Fall term classes will begin Sept. 24, but new student pro grams will get under way a week earlier and fraternity and sorority rush programs will be held early to avoid conflict with classes. Opening general assembly tor all new freshmen and transfer students is schedul ed Sept. 19. Registration will be Sept. 20 and 21 with the first football game of the year scheduled Sept. 22 against Iowa State at Portland. Facul ty Day, which officially launches the new school year for the staff, will be Sept. 11. OSU's enrollment last fall soared to 9,039. 1,100 students more than ever before. Admis sion totals and housing re quests point to the nearly 10, 000 total this1 year. Record Enrollment Seen Along with a record enroll ment, students will find the greatest building year in OSU history under way, President James H. Jensen noted. A new 325-bed dormitory was completed in August and will help ease housing prob lems; another new 375-bed dormitory and cafeteria have been started for completion next fall; and the new $2, 385,000 library is in early stages of construction. A new Oceanography building, radia tion center, and computer cen ter are expected to be started during the school year. A new forestry sciences laboratory operated by the U.S. forest service was dedi cated last month on the OSU campus. Two new deans have been appointed during the summer. They are Dr. Vernon H. Chel delin, school of scienee, and Dr. Edmund Volkart, school of humanities and social sci ences. This fall, ROTC training will become voluntary for freshmen and sophomore men. It had been required in the past.
