Jacobson, district manager, Mcdford Social Se curity office, has noted, "and we strive constantly to im prove our check-writing and mailing procedures." "But, no matter how much we improve, no matter how modern our equipment Is, we still need the cooperation of the beneficiary," he said. "Too often we get a phone call say ing, 'My social security check didn't come today and I need it badly'." Checks usually arrive about the first of the month, Jacob son explained. "Usually the person has changed his ad dress and we haven't been notified." Urged To Report He urged any social security beneficiary who plans to move to report his new address as soon as it is known. Changes repoiied early in the month will be shown on the next check. Otherwise the check will go to the old address and there may be a delay in for warding. the Treasury Department marked "undellverable" or "moved - left no forwarding address," he said. This hap pens when neither the post of fice nor the Social Security administration has been noti fied of a new address. To be sure a check is not returned, beneficiaries should notify both agencies, Jacobson said. To change an address on a social security check, visit at the social security office or write a nolo showing the full name, the claim number and new address. Lumber Orders Higher Than One Week Ago Portland (UPI) L umber orders last week were five per cent Mgher than in the corresponding week ' a year ago, the Western Pine Asso ciation said today. Lumber shipments from the association's mills were up four per cent and production was up three per cent. Some Bacteria Not Destroyed in Wash Corvallis-It takes more than hot water and soap to destroy disease-causing bacteria in home laundry. Even "sanitizing" with dis infectants will not destroy all bacteria, but it will reduce their numbers to less danger ous levels. Thirty species of bacteria, including many associated with human diseases, furvived typical home laundering methods and exposure to sev eral disinfectants, Dr. Elhel McNeil reported to the So ciety for Industrial Microbiol ogy meeting here. Tests were made by attach ing little swatches of fabric to articles of clothing just be fore laundering. Dr. McNeil said. She is a bacteriologist with the U.S. department of Registration Set For Phoenix Pupils Phoenix Registration for first year elementary school students in Phoenix and Tal ent will be held Friday, Sept. 7 in the Phoenix and Talent primary grades' buildings, ac cording to R. "Parents are to show evi dence of their child's birth date and proof that a health examination has been given the child by the family physi cian or during one of the pre school clinics conducted by the Jackson county public health department." Before laundering, these swatches contained a maxi mum of SO bacteria per square inch. At the end of the rinse cycle, she said, as many as 21,000 bacteria per square inch were isolated. Bacteria Redepotited This indicates that bacteria are being redeposited during laundering. Soiled clothing was obtain ed from nine families who brought their washing to Dr. McNeil's laboratory over a pe riod of several months. Both "warm" and "hot" wash wa ters were used. Disinfectants included a quaternary am monium compound, a phenolic compound, and a commercial bleach containing sodium hy pochlorite. These disinfectants are available now, Dr. McNeil said, and probably will be come widely used. In some cases, after use of a disinfectant, Dr. McNeil re ported, bacteria were recov ered from the cloth swatch but not from the rinse water. Report Some Symptoms Three of seven families with laundry swatches con taining one form of bacteria reported skin lesions or res piratory symptoms in at least one member of the family. Species of another form were identified in the laundry of eight families; members in five of these families reported intestinal disorders. Another form of bacteria, one which is "isolated with in creasing frequency from uri nary tract infections" and one which may be associated with middle car infections, endo carditis and pneumonia, was identified in the laundry of seven families. In three of these, one person in the fam ily had either an ear infection or an infection of the genito urinary tract. Occasionally these three bacteria were isolated from rinse water after treatment with the ammonium or phe nolic disinfectants, although in greatly reduced numbers. Using the swatch technique, the USDA scientists found no significant difference between results obtained from the phe nolic and the ammonium dis infectants. No strains of three important bacteria "of most interest from the standpoint of household hygiene" were recovered from swatches fol lowing use of the chlorine bleach. However, this bleach cannot be used on all fabrics, Dr. McNeil noted. More than 1,500 colonies of bacteria were examined. The research is part of a three year evaluation of disinfect ants for home laundering.
