.mis mm- Extra-Hole Tussles Highlight Southern Oregon Golf Friday; Tom Shaw Three extra - hole conflicts and some sub - par jaunts around the links featured men's championship flight round skirmishing Friday in the Southern Oregon golf 1 tournament here. Ed Kovacovich, in his sec ond straight extra elfort of the tourney, took 21 holes, three over the regulation 18, to nick Dr. William Miller, Medford. who had rallied from four holes down. Bob Smith, Fort Ord, Calif., also wen. 21 before sidelining Dick Davis, Albany. Dom Provost Jr., Ashland and Rogue Valley SO cham pion in 1954, put together a comeback to overcome Jack Vollstedt, Billings, Mont., on the 10th. A pre-tourncy favorite who shared men's low qualifying honors was eliminated when Tom Shaw, ex-University of Oregon linksman, turned in two under par to beat Don Krieger, fellow Columbia Edgewatcr of Portland club player, 4 and 3. Krieger, suf fering from a nose-bleed, drop ped the first three holes of the match, conceding the third. Shaw; putting well, closed out with a 20-foot shot on No. 15. He had knocked a chip shot into the cup on 10. DcRoss Kinkade, Cot t a g e Grove, who tied with Krieger for low qualifying card, moved into Saturday's third round with a 4 and 3 verdict over Bob Atkinson, Portland, three times Southern Oregon winner. Kinkade was one un der par. Stewart Schroeder, defend ing titlist and representing the home links, gained Satur day action with a 3 and 2 vic tory over Richard D. Hunt, Eugene. Stew putted well. He was one over par. Grant Lawton, Portland, ousted six-limes champion Ed die Simmons, Medford, 1 up with two over par. Widest championship brack et winning margin Friday was built by Jim Sheldon, Rogue Valley Country club titlist. He was one below par as he hit the ball well in a 6 to 5 de cision over Tom Corbett, Rose ville, Calif. Long Putts By Miller Seven players from the home links won in the second round while six were elimi nated. In tussles between RVCC players Harvey Woods Jr., Ashland, beat Bob Maentz 4 and 3 and Dr. N. J. Wilson subdued Justin Smith Jr. 1 up. Dr. D. C. Boals ad vanced wtih a 3 and 1 over Glen Scharback, Oswego, and Dr. Robert Buck with a 4 and 3 margin over Jim Walsh, also Oswego. Larry Hirons, Eugene and Oregon State university dropped Dr. Ralph Odell 2 and 1 and Dodd Fisher, Eu gene, tripped Craig Miller. Two sensational putts by Dr. William Miller highlight ed his match with Kovacovich. He put in a 30-footer uphill to square the tilt on No. 19. Miller hit the ball high. It hesitated on the edge of the cup then dropped back and in. On the first extra hole Miller holed a 40-foot birdie putt and Kovacovich an eight-footter to halve the hole. The two players tied No. 20 with a par and Kovacovich claimed the match on 21 with a par when a four-foot putt failed to go down for Miller. Out of Bounds The Medford doctor was 4 down after 11 holes. He won 12 and 13 and was just 1 down after prabbing 16 with a bird. Kovtcovich was out of bounds on 12. Smith captured his match with Davis when the Albany player hit out of bounds on 21. The Fort Ord player and ex-Portland State collegian, parred the hole. Davis had a chance on 19 but muffed a one-foot putt that would have given him a bird. The two parred 20. Provost was two down go ing into No. 15. He took 16 with a bird and won 17 with a par when Vollstedt hit his tee shot into trees. On 19 Provost just missed an eagle three when his chip rimmed the cup. leaving him a short birdie putt. Miss Wright Leads in Golf Open Spokane, Wash. - (IINl -Mickey Wright, Dallas, Tex., stroked her second four-unrter-par 68 and took a command ing four-stroke lead in the second round of the S7.500 Spokane Women's Open Sat urday afternoon. Marlene Hagge, Florhan Park, N.J., tiring after (17 Friday on the par 72 Esmeral da course, slipped to a 73 and a tic for second place with 140 as her approach shots fell short all afternoon. She tied with Ruth Jcssen, Seat tle who fired her second 70. Barbara Romack, Grossing er, N. Y., remained the lone eagle in third place. Though like most of the 26 profession al and 22 amateur field it took her several more strokes Saturday to cover the 18 holes than Friday. The blond New Yorker had an even-par 72 after Friday's 69. Trailing in fourth place with 142 s were Kalhy Whit worth, Jal, New Mexico, and amateur Claudia Lindor, An acortes, Wash. Miss Lindor remained the leading amateur as she shot a 74 to go with Friday's 68. Shirley Englehorn, Cald well, considers Esmeralda her home course, shot a disap pointing 74 after a 70 in the opener and dropped from fourth to a three-way tie for sixth. With exception of a 40-foot rolling chip shot which fell into the cup on the 17th for a birdie two, she failed to sink her putts. Miss Wright, the Ladies Professional Golf association leading money winner and last year's Spokane Open win ner, was one under on the front nine and three under on the back nine. The Dallas lass got birdies on four of five holes 8, B, 11, 12. Harvey Woods, Ashland, won from Mickey, 3 and 2. Had Mickey won, the Shaw brothers would have met in a quarterfinal match today. The two have yet to face each other in a tournament. Tom completed his varsity career at University of Oregon last spring. He plays out of Columbia-Edgewater club. Mickey will be a sophomore bidding for a varsity berth at U of O this year. Il!i'i Blonde Joanne Gunderson. a superb exhibition of putting, routed 17-year-old Ann Baker of Maryville, Tenn., B and 8 Saturday to become the sixth contestant in history to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf championship at least three times. Miss Gunderson, who lives in Kirkland, Wash., 30 miles from 1061 tilleholder Anne Quast Decker, whizzed over the first 18 holes of this 36 hole match-play final over the sloping Country club of Ro chester course with a two-un-dcr-par 70. The torrid round was the best ever recorded by a woman over this 36-36 par 72, 6,161-yard layout, and pushed Joanne to a 6-up lead at the halfway mark. Best Previous Round Mrs. Jean Trainnr of Ro chester, N.Y., a member of the host club, netted a one-over par 73 on Sept. 6, 1061, for the best previous round. Miss Gundeison's 70 will not go into the record books here be cause of a pair of conceded putts on the first 18 holes. Mrs. Glenna Collelt Vare Jr. won this tournament a record six times. Miss Gunderson, who seem ed to be more serious about golf Saturday than in six previous matches, overwhelm ed the Tennessee teen-ager with her long-range drives and dcadeyc putting. Jeanne ended the match on the 28th, a par 5, 525-yarder and the granridaddy of them all here. It was on this same hole that she notched the on ly eagle of the tournament earlier in the day. Ends Tourney Schedule Miss Gunderson, who said the women's amateur ended her tournament schedule for the year, really proved her pre-match statement that "I'm on the verge of playing very, Denver Broncs Look at Shaw Denver -iUPIi- Former Ore gon quarterback George Shaw may play with the Denver Broncos of the American Football league this season. Denver Coach Jack Faulk ner said Friday that the 29-year-olri Shaw, who was cut earlier this week by the Min nesota Vikings of the Nation al Football league, will join the Broncos on a "look-sec" basis Sunday or Monday. He said team physicians would examine Shaw to de termine whether bone chips in his knee would handicap him in the future. He said, pending the outcome of the examination, the club would try to work out contract ar rangements with Shaw.
