MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON FRIDAY. AUGUST 31. 1962 Davies Subdues Robinson in SO Golf Championships; Schroeder, Schmidt Triumph in First Round One defending champion triumphed by an overwhelm ing margin, another slipped by his foe in extra holes and a third was pushed out of titular contention yesterday in the first round matches of the Southern Oregon Golf tournament at Rogue Valley Country club. Stew Schroeder, the 1961 victor in the men's division, playing one-under par, thump ed Jim Crow 7 and 6 in a tangle between home course players. Carl Schmidt, Med ford, who nabbed the senior men's mantle last year, re quired three extra greens to advance to quarterfinals. He nicked Marvin Clark, Grants Pass, the 1957 and 1958 win ner, on the 21st. Mrs. Helen Davies, Med ford, pulled off the surpriser of the day. The seven times women's champ, who has not held the crown since 1953, tripped the 1961 title taker. Miss June Robinson. Score was 2 and 1. This was termed a scrambling match with nei ther lady playing well. Mrs. Davies vas reported around seven over par and Miss Rob inson, Oregon coast chcmp, nine. Medalists moved ahead in both the men's and ladies' titular brackets. They faltered in the senior play. Don K r i e g e r, Columbia Edgewater, and DeRoss Kin kade, Cottage Grove, men's low qualifiers with 71s, de feated a pair of Laurelwood, Eugene divoters, Tim Berg and Fred Wilhelm, respec tively. Counts were 2 and 1 in each tilt. Mrs. Shirley Mitchell, Chi co, Calif., ladies medalist, stroked about five over par. But, it was sufficient for the 1960 SO champion to turn back Mrs. S. A. Peters, Med ford, 5 and 4. George Parsons, Seattle, and Karl Bennett, Grants Pass, who took the diadem in 1959, were the medalist beaters in the senior scuffles. Parsons subdued Ray Isaacs, Colum-bia-Edgewater, 1 up. Bennett won from fellow townsman, Jess Bradley, Grants Pass. This official score was not reported. Larry Butler, Med ford, who gained the senior toga in 1960, advanced yester day with a 2 and 1 verdict over Bayard Getchell, also Medford. Past Champs Victors All champions of past years in the men's top flight were victorious in their Thursday bouts. Bob Atkinson, Port land, three times state and Southern Oregon winner, de feated Rodney Harpster, Ar cadia, Calif. 4 and 3, v, ith one above par play. Eddie Sim mons, who has taken the Rogue Valley tourney diadem six times and the stale mantle once, downed Duane Roisen, lllahe, Salem, 3 and 1. Sim mons was three over par and once held a 4 up lead. Dom Provost Jr., Ashland, a home course representative who won the tourney in 1954, whipped William Cairns, Bellevue, Wash., 7 and 6. But for one double bogey Provost would have been three under par. Krieger, a former Oregon champ, was reported around six over par yesterday. His putts were not dropping. Schroeder dropped in three birds. He hit 11 of the greens on the 12 holes he played. Even After 15 In the Davies - Robinson match the two were even after 15 holes. Helen had been 2 up at the turn. Miss Robinson missed the green on 16 and Mrs. Davies took the hole with a par for 1 up. On 17 June mrosed a one-foot putt which would have given her a par while the Medford play er parred with a four-footer. Three men's championship flight encounters went extra holes. Dodd Fisher, Eugene, tripped James Ellington, Lodi, Calif., in 20. Nineteen holers were Ed Kovacovich Eureka, Calif., over Jerry Anderson, Medford, and Bob Smith, Fort Ord, Calif., over Jim Bucello, Napa, Calif. Anderson three down after 15 holes, took the next three to tie Kovacovich, who is a perennial contender in this Labor day holiday links classic. Kovacovich hit up for a short birdie putt to nab the extra hole. Among the highlight shots of the day was an 85-foot birdie putt on No. 6 by Roy Morgan. Royal Oaks, Vancou ver, Wash. He won 4 and 3 from Lee Flink. formerly of Medford and new club champ at Reames course at Klamath Falls. Among the home club play ers who took opening tangles were Craig Miller. Harvey Iffho are poor WHITE TRASH" Woods (Ashland), Boo ivlaentz, Jim Sheldon (RVCC club champ), Dr. D. C. Boals, Dr. Robert Buck, Dr. William Miller, Dr. Ralph Odell, Jus tin Smith Jr. and Dr. N. J. Wilson. In the men s championship second round today Schroeder ran into Richard L. Hunt, Eu gene. Krieger met Tom Shaw, Columbia-Edgewater and star for University of Oregon last spring. Shaw beat Dennis Mc Manus, Eureka, Calif., 6 and and 5 with one below par play. Kinkade opposed Atkin son today. Simmons' foe was Grant Lawton, Portland, who played even par in a 4 and 3 win over Bruce Cadwell, Seattle. Provost encountered Jack Vollstedt, Billings, Mont. Vollstedt nipped Alan Holmes, one of the top Medford link sters, 1 up in one of the hottest matches yesterday. He was two under par and Holmes one under. Flayers in the women's and senior men's title flights did not contend today. They en gage in Saturday quarter finals. Among the ladies it will be Mrs. Mitchell versus Mrs. Shirley Teutsch, Med ford; Miss Pam Stacey, Med ford, against Miss Pat Dwyer, Waverley, Portland; Mrs. Davies against Mrs. Arietta Templeton, Medford, and Mrs. Corrine Miller, Medford, op posing Mrs. Glen Scharback, Oswego. Senior quarters will have Parsons taking on Dr. Fred erick Tucker, Seattle; Karl Bennett playing Ben Hamp ton, Sonoma, Calif., Schmidt facing Charles Bennett, Mon rovia, Calif., and Butler going against Andy Hoylv, Red Bluff, Calif. By RAYMOND C. MEANS San Diego, Calif. IUP1I If the San Diego Chargers could build up their spotty offense to the high standards of their defense, they would have little difficulty winning their third consecutive Western di vision title in the American Football League. That, however, is a big "If." The Chargers' defense has been rated tops in the AFL and the offense has a long way to go in order to catch up with it. It didn't help coach Sid Gillman's plans any, either, when halfback Paul Lowe, the league's fourth leading ground-gainer last 'Reason, broke his arm. Lowe should be out for eight weeks and Gillman must find a speedboy to replace him in the start ing backfield. The defensive forward wall of Ron Nery, zlill Hudson, Ernie Ladd and Earl Faison is the biggest in football, and barring injury, should be bet ter than last, year. Ladd and Faison now have a year's pro experience. Defensive Backfield Strong The defensive backfield is another strong point. The club set a professional foot ball record for pass Intercep tions last year, and everyone had a hand in the achieve ment. Although safetyman Bob Zeman was traded to Denver, head coach Sid Gill man considers his replace ment, Keith Lincoln, the best all-around player on the team. Gillman feels the lineback ing corps of Chuck Allen in the middle flanked by Emil LAMPORT'S Medford's Most Popular SPORTING GOODS STORE 226 East Main Street Bushnell, Weaver, Leapold, Lyman, Bausch Lomb, Cornell RIFLE SCOPES Phone 772-6815 Open Fridays Until 9 P.M. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE rookies. Bob Mitinger of Penn State or Frank Bumcon of Southern Caifornia, ranks with the best in the league. Punter Paul Maguire is a capable reserve. Much of the offensive weak ness is attributed to the line, which has been reinformed by rookie Dick Hudson of Memphis State at tackle and rookie Wayne Frazier of Au burn battling Don Rogers for the starting center berth. Ron Mix has been shifted to guard, and Gillman feels the former All-League tackle is the club's offensive leader. Loaded With Receivers The Chargers are loaded with pass receivers. Rookies Lance Alworth of Arkansas and Jerry Robinson of Gram bling have speed and compli ment the good hands and moves of experienced Don Norton and Dave Kocourek. Reg Carolan, a six-foot-six, high jumper from Idaho Uni versity acids depth. Gillman had high hopes for Rookie halfback Bert Coan of Kansas as a possible start er. But Coan suffered a bro ken leg in the spring of 1961 and has seen little contact work since. He is the only other halfback on the roster and will get first call. If Coan fails, the sensation of the camp, Jacques MacKin non, a converted lineman, probably will be transferred from fullback. MacKinnon has been the Chargers' leading ground gainer in exhibitions and showed his speed on a 97 yard scoring pass-run play against Denver, If MacKinnon moves to half, rookie Bob Jackson of New Mexico State will get a shot at the fullback job. Veteran Jack Kemp is Medalists Play Off A nine-hole playoff for med alist honors in the Southern Oregon Golf tourney will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hogue Volley Country club. !
