1957 Award of Merit Winner 1 National Educator To Local Miss Mary Alice Jones, di rector of the department of education of children with the Methodist board of education, will be at First Methodist church here Wednesday, Sep tember 5. Miss Jones, an author, will speak at 2:30 p.m. to teachers of all denominations. At 7:45 p.m., she will speak on Meth odist curriculum to church school teachers and parents. The Rev. Gerald C. The Senior high Methodist Youth fellowship will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. The College Age fellowship will meet at 6:30 p.m., also at the church, and then go to the Nelson home. The Youth choir will prac tice at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The first Chancel choir rehearsal for the fall season will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Women's Bible class will hold their monthly meet ing on Thursday at 1 p.m in the library room of the church. The morning worship serv ice will be at 9:30 a.m. Dur ing the worship hour, child care will be provided for pre school children in Pilgrim House. The first through fourth grade class will meet in the parsonage Tuesday evening at 8 p.m., the church council will meet to consider the life of the church and to make plans for the coming months. All the elected officers of the church will take part in this meeting. Tiie members of the church school staff for this year will meet Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Moore on Meadows road In Sams Valley. The meeting will begin with sup per at 6 p.m., which will be followed by orientation and presentation of fall curricu lum materials. WILLCUTS New Pastor Pastor Arrives To Serve Local Friends Church The Rev. Jack L. Willcuts will preach his first sermon at the Medford Friends church, corner of Merrimn rd. and DeBarr ave.. Sunday. The morning topic will be There is a Future in the Church," and the evening topic is "Faith for the Fu ture." Mr. Willcuts and his family moved to Medford this week from Newberg, Ore. He was pastor of the West Chehalem Friends church there for four years. A graduate of George Fox college in Newberg, Mr. Wil lcuts has taken graduate work at the College of Puget Sound and the University of Oregon, in journalism and sociology. The Willcuts began two terms of service with the "Friends church mission in Bolivia, South America, soon after their marriage in 1945. Their two older children, Stuart, 13, and Susan, 12, were born there. They have another daughter, .lancll, 9. During the period in Bo livia the pastor served as secretary of evangelism, and for two years was chairman of the Bolivian Inter-mission fellowship. At this time he is editor of the "Northwest Friend." monthly church publication. He is president of the Oregon Yearly Meeting Board of Kvangellsm of the Friends church, and Is a member of the executive committee of the Ftiendsvlew Manor board, sponsor of a retirement home in Newberg. In addition, he belongs to the Friends church board of Publications of the Northwest. Nazarenes Plan Labor Day Picnic The third annual Sunday school picnic for the First Church of the Nazarcne will be held this Labor day begin ning at 11 a.m. at Hawthorne park. Pastor Returns to Pulpit, Tells Topic "Breaking, or Broken," is to be the title of the Sunday sermon by the Rev. Clifford J. Young, pastor of the East wood Baptist church. Mr. Young will return to the pul pit from his vacation. The text of the sermon is Psalms 51:17. Holy commun ion will be observed. Mr. Young will leave Sept. 5 to attend a State Camp Pro gram planning committee meeting in Salem. On Thurs day he will join other Ameri can Baptist pastors of south ern Oregon in "Pastor's Con versations" at Camp Myrtle wood. A number of laymen from the church plan to attend the American Baptist Laymen's conference at Camp Arra Wanna next week. This re treat will feature an address by Gov. Mark Hatfield. Westminster Dr. Robert Boyd Munger, pastor of the University Presbyterian church, Seattle, Wash., will be the guest speaker at West minster Presbyterian church Sunday at the 11 a.m. wor ship service. His subject will be "The Opportunities of the Ordinary." Dr. Munger re cently completed a 17 - year pastorate at the First Presby terian church, Berkeley, Calif. Dr. Munger has led Relig ious Emphasis week programs at University of Washington; Columbia university, New York; Dubuque university, Iowa; and the University of British Columbia. In 1954 he was invited by the United Church of South India to con duct a special preaching mis sion for two months, and in 1956 he was Invited to Beirut, Lebanon, for a city - wide preaching mission and min istry to seminary students and pastors. New Pastor Assumes Duties in Ashland Ashland The Rev. Paul E. Otte will begin his duties as minister of the First Con gregational church in Ash land Sunday. He comes from St. Paul's United church, Waldorf, Minn. Mr. Otte is a graduate of Morningside college, Sioux City, Iowa, and of Eden Theo logical Seminary, Webster Groves, Mo. He has served churches in Iowa, North Dakota and Minnesota, and until accepting the Ashland pastorate was youth leader for Fairbault county Minn., council of churches. Mrs. Otte is a registered nurse, and the couple have a daughter, Denise, 5, and a son, David Paul. Mr. Otte succeeds the Rev. Edward F. Wulfekuehler, who resigned in June to return to service as an Army chaplain. SUBJECT GIVEN The Rev. William Wash will deliver the message entitled "One Thing Many Lives Lack," at the morning service of Church of the Brethren Sunday. Holiday Rallies Planned by Youth Rogue Valley Youth for Christ will sponsor rallies Friday night and Saturday night, a Saturday meeting for the teens of YFC clubs and the Teen Chorale over the Labor day week end. The Teen World Singers will present the Friday night rally in McLoughlin Junior High school at 7:30 p.m. Dave Grant, baritone solo ist and trombonist of the YFCI crusade staff will be the focal point of the Satur day night rally, also at Mc Loughlin Junior high, at 7:30 p.m. He will direct the Teen Chorale for this rally. . John E. Simon, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church, 1020 East Main street, plans to return tonight from Camp Colton, east of Oregon City, where he and several young people from his con gregation have spent the week. Another group of young people spent the week at Camp Dead Indian Soda Springs. Curtis Holmes, a member of St. Peter's, man aged the camp. Sunday services at St. Peter's will be held at the usual times, 8:15 and 11 a.m. Baptist Affiliation Organizes In O'Brien O'Brien-A new Conserva tive Baptist affiliation was or ganized at the O'Brien church August 21. A group of eleven originating charter members sent In their application for a pastor and selected three members to draw up a consti tution. The Rev. Edward Duerksen of the First Baptist church of Selma, acted as moderator for the organiza tional meeting. Sunday school and church services are being held every Sunday at 9:45 and 11 a.m. with Pastor Arthur Drews in charge until a pastor has been assigned.
