FRIDAY. Dennis the ' I can't STARTED The Atactica by ,3 NEW HOPE FOR MENTALLY DISTURBED The millions oJ persons who at times are mentally disturb ed or have a loved relative who is dis turbed will find hope in the splenc'id article on the family treat ment of psy choses, p r e pared for a recent n u m ber of The Alvarei oiuuruay eve ning Post by my good friends, tliose able science writers, Milton and Margaret Silver man. They tell of the recent rev olution in psychiatric practice. After 40 years of refusal to face the obvious fact that many disturbed persons have much trouble at home, trying to adjust to the vagaries and acoUlinus of one or more rel atives, many psychiatrists arc at last changing their ways of practice, and arc beginning to insist that the patient bring his relatives to the interviews at tile office. Usually these relatives pro test thai they are all right, and need no help, but when they come in, and perhaps one of them promptly gets into a bitter argument with Ihc palient, it becomes obvi ous that some of the persons in the home need psychiatric treatment almost as much as does the man (or woman.) Then the psychiatrist may see that the unhappy patient cannot get well or stay well until his odd relatives have been taught to stop annoying him, or accusing him of hav ing cost them mi ch money because of "his foolishness." The family must learn to help the cloclor and not to hamper him in his work. Decided Reversal This "family lie.itmeni" marks now a decided reversal of psychiatric policy. During the Inst 2i) years or more, 1 have talked to a number of wive? of mentally disturbed men who had gone to be psy choanalyzed. When wi lout much study of the situation the analyst said to he man. "Your troubles are nil due to your wife." the poor wom an hurried lo see the analyst to find out wherein she had failed. As she -;iid, if slit' was in the wrong, she was anxious to mend her ways and lo help in bringing about her hus band's recovery. Hut in every one of the cases in which I was later consulted, the an alyst sent out word that on principle he would not see the wife, and would not discuss her hu'-b;tnd's problem with her. I know very well that there is some sense to this becaue the husband and wife are likely to twist the psy chiatrist's words so as to make it appear that he was in sym pathy with them. It is dan gerous to talk to the two sep arately, and much safer to talk to them together. According to the authori ties limited by the Silver mans, the results of the new family group treatment are not always spectacular, but in many cast's they are much belter than are those obtain' able bv treating the patient alone. I am happy to hear about this new method of treatment because for 'mlf a r "tOOF$ VKi.TE TfRf-SH" See how they live 251 f IPS-H UMljHT li ii sr.nifKi 14 A r 1 AUGUST 31. 1962 Menace go to bed 1 just A NEW PIECE Roundup fcrnerllils Consultant In Medirtn Mavo Clinic Cmerltii. Protestor of Medicine Alayu clinic (Register and Trlliunt Syndicate. 1U62) century I Iiave been using it successfully. 1 have always talked to members of the fam ily, to see what they are like and to gel ihern to co-operate with me. Hundreds of times I have almost cured a patient by getting an unreasonable father or mother to "lay off of him," and treat him with more kindness and sympathy and understanding. My life-long research in this field of medicine began in 1012 when into my office came two emotionally dis turbed women, each with a mcr tally retarded child. 1 soon found that one of these women had an insane sister, a mentally retarded sister and a badly adjusted brother; the other woman had an alcoholic brothei, a "town drunk" un cle and an a sexual sister. Kept Making Notei These people got me so in terested in the different ways in which a tendency to men tal troubles can show up in the several members of three or four generations in a fam ily that I kept making notes, and in 11)51 1 published a big book on what actually hap pened In the way of neuroses and psychoses to the members of 673 families I had come to know well tPractical Leads To Puzzling Diagnoses - Lip pineotl). This book Is so full of fas einaling information about the many interesting symp toms or illness that can show up in the "relatives of the psy chotic" that it would be of great help to the new school of psychiatrists who are now treating the oddities of the relatives of their patients. Ohvinmly, all persons who are so mentally disturbed or poorly adjusted that they feel the need of medical help should try to find the type of either old-fashioned or "new fashioned" psychiatrist who will gladly interview and stt.dy the whole family, and will plead with the more ec centric nnd i.ifficult and ir ritable relatives to ralm down and slop nagging at the pa tient. In my last book. Minds That Came Hack (LippinciiU) I told of men who, when they went home after discharge from a mental hospital, soon returned to it. saying that they were much happier with their old buddies in the con valescent ward than with their parents and brothers at home. Often the patient's family doctor can say which of the several psychiatrists in the city is most likely lo help in this new and sensible way.
