ORHr,OV Haupert Describes Trip To View Norway's Midnight Sun FILM WITHDRAWN Edinburgh, Scotland - H'PH -The West German movie "Tsar to Stalin" has been withdrawn from the Edin burgh Film Festival be cause it offended some Rus sian visitors, according to a festival spokesman. He said no official protest was made. The withdrawal followed So viet comments that called the film's English dialogue anti Soviet propaganda, untrue and damaging. (July 7) Jon (my AFS brother) and I are going north to try to see the midnight sun! We are go ing by scooter. We shall go to the city of Tromso on the northwest coast. The journey will be 975 miles, one way, and will take two weeks. We are going to sleep out if the weather is good, and stay in youth hostels if not. (July 22) Well, we made il. All 975 bumpy, hilly, rocky, muddy, narrow, curvy and delightful miles of il. It was a wonder ful trip, and I have been through some rugged country. 1 cannot possibly describe the whole journey but will try to review it briefly. For a long time we were in Norway's largest and most famous valley. It has steep hills, covered with green trees and shrubs. A river ran along the center of Ihe valley, II re minded me of the Columbia river gorge area, but It was not so wide and it was much greener. In the highlands there are large treeless moun tains with patches of snow on them and small blue lakes along the road. Follow a River Going out of the mountains we followed a river like the Rogue higher up. The rivers here are clear, clean and quite fast. Few roads In Norway arc paved, and the traveling is rough. The first day we made 300 kilometers; 1)32 the sec ond. (One kilometer is one and six-tenths miles.) We trav eled for about six hours along (he Trondheim fjord. The fjords are pretty, blue and ; clear. You can sec to the bot tom in about :)Q or 40 feel of water. We also passed the Arctic circle. Our stay in the youth hos tels was fun. I have met kids; from many different coun- j tries, including France, Brit-; sin, Germany, Sweden and The Netherlands. I find that people in Europe travel a great decl, especially young people. Many of the kids I met in j Ihe youth hostels were hitch hiking. I have seen girls hitch hiking, too, but usually In pairs. The youth hostels are popular with these people. It eosls three kroner to slay for , one night (that is 42 cents). Sees Midnight Sun Wc saw the midnight sun when we were in the town of Narvick. We rode a cable car part way up a mountuin, and then hiked the rest of the way 1 to the top. We saw the sun. and it was really beautiful. It is a big red-orange ball which is almost Into Ihe ocean. More beautiful than the sun itself. I thought, was the light it played on the clouds that had , gathered over our heud during Ihe late evening.
