MEDF0RD JTribune SECTION B MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24. 1962 PAGES 1 to 10 21 Miles of Winnemucca Highway Still Remains To Be Completed, Writer Notes By PEG HUTCHINSON Mail Tribuna Slafi Wiiter Winnemucca, Nev. "Med ford, Ore." the motel owner exclaimed as he approached the car. "You've come a long way." "Not very far by the 'Win-nemucca-to-the-Sea' route." You feel like a miniature chamber of commerce as you explain the road is paved ail the way through to Lakeview. Winnemucca is a welcome sight to the east-bound travel er on this route. Few people and even fewer cars are seen after leaving Lakeview. Win nemucca is 210 miles away. Not completed is the 21V4 miles from Blizzard Gap (6,- 120 foot elevation at the top of the grade) to the Nevada line. Only one coat of oil has been applied so far, it is ex pected to be completed this week,) but finally one gets used to the rhythm of the gravel hitting the fenders. From Lakeview to Adel it is 34 miles, Adel to the Ne vada line 38.5 miles, and from the Nevada line to Highway 95, 113.4 miles. Here the traf fic increases and of the 35 cars passed between Adel and Winnemucca, 18 were on Highway 95. The section of the highway pioneered by Lake county is of Alturas, Calif., to where the most spectacular, contain ing both Blizzard Gap and the Daugherty Rim. At the Bliz zard Gap summit the traveler sees 7'i miles of highway stretching into the distance ending as it angles for three miles up the Daugherty rim. The view of Guano valley from Daugherty rim is breath taking, comparable to Death valley only the mounds be low are sage brush, not salt. The highway will satisfy the most timid driver as the narrowest and most winding section is the old highway be tween Lakeview and Adel in Warner canyon. It was in Warner valley there was a slight delay - not for construction, but for a cat tle drive. Highway Now Paved For this traveler, more in teresting was rebuilt Highway 8A in northern Humboldt county in Nevada. Three years ago the road was trav eled; but what a difference. What in 1959 was an im proved cattle trail thick with dust, is now an asphalted highway. Steep hills and sharp curves have been elim inated and we had to watch closely to spot the remnants of the former road. A motorist can still travel this road east the oil starts 38 miles west of Denio. The paved stretch in Ne vada deadending' at the Ore gon line before the Oregon section was finished, was re ferred to by some Nevada politicians as "the longest air strip in the country." This traveler didn't side track to Denio, having stop ped there in 1959. This village, being referred to as in Nevada, caused some confusion since it once was in Oregon. It was recently learn ed that the postmaster (the post office is in his home) had it moved to the state he pre ferred Prior to the highway's dedi cation next month, travelers should be warned that signs are few and far between. This means no speed signs, but also missing are the traffic caution signs, ' An increase in travel was noticed since in 1959 when only two cars were passed along Highway 8A until it reaches Highway 95. One can imagine that the straight stretches of sage brush will soon give way to gambling ca sinos, gas stations, and motels, not to mention billboards of all shapes and sizes. Sherri Finkbine Leaves Hospital; To Go Home Soon Stockholm HJPD Mrs. Sher ri Finkbine, 30, who under went a legal abortion here last week, left Caroline Hospital today. The Phoenix, Ariz., mother of four and her husband, Rob ert, plan to stay in Stockholm another week to rest before returning to the United States. They hope to be back in Phoe nix Sept. 3. Mrs. Finkbine sought the abortion in fear her expected baby had been deformed be cause she took the drug thali domide. She had been denied a legal abortion in the United States. Fatug Deformed Finkbine announced after the operation that doctors had confirmed the fetus was de formed. Mrs. Finkbine was reported in a weak condition and still mentally agitated. She and her husband cancelled a plan ned trip to Paris and went into hiding here. Finkbine ap pealed to the press not to try to find them. He said his wife was so weak that a meeting with the press could mean a mental collapse. Meanwhile, the Vatican again condemned the Fink bines' action in obtaining the abortion. The Vatican Radio called the abortion "a crime," and said that "strange is the love of a society and of a mother that inflict death to assure themselves a serene and tran quil life." Society Blamed Referring to the unborn child, the radio said: 'He was a man. He was alive. He was innocent. He has been killed ... for the even tual suspected deformities, so ciety was responsible; he was simply the victim. And yet these things have been in puted to him as a fault that required capital punshment. It was decreed for love. He has been suppressed for love, to spare him a life of suffering and tears. But even the disabled, even the most horribly mutilated per sons, want to live. Happiness is an Interior and spiritual fact."
