14 B THURSDAY, AUGUST 23. 1362 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGOf Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS (Reqiitci and Tribunt SyndicaC 1962) LEGAL NOTICES Architectural Miracle -The Spider's Web Just take a minute some day to look carefully at a spider's web. Not thx raffed, lag-end cobweb hanging Irom a rafter or a living room ceil ing, but the masterpiece of architectural symmetry made by any of the orb-weaver spi drrs - the common garden spider for instance, "ou will find it in the most logical place: right in a garden. Viewing one of these ex quisite doily-like structures - especially on a dewy morn ing when the summer sun enhances the dew-drops to jewel-like perfection - should instill in the most blase of us an inspiring awe of the wonders of things, for the spider's web is the rarest and most exquisitely beautiful of Nature's symmetries. The web will be stretched between two bushes, some times several feet apart. One end may even be attached to the corner of a building, a fence post or a tree. The web i? strategically placed. She who constructed it had a pretty good idea of how many flying insects would come (hat way, so the web is placed to intercept the greatest num ber. Any Distance Neither dors Mrs. Spider care how far apart the anchor post happens to be; she is :apablc of running the anchor lines any distance. Then, the Iwo ends secured, she selects a place somewhere along their lengths to construct the geometrical web. Then, the two ends secured, she selects 9 place somewhere along Iheir lengths to construct the ecomctrical web. Anchor lines first, of strong tensile strength; then cross lines, -adii and spokes. Remarkable that Mrs. Spl- ior really can't see what, she is doing as the silken lines are forming behind her. Her (pinncrcts are located at the rear end of the .ibdoincn liny, finger-like nozzles con- iccted by tubes to silk ducts nside her body. What will be the web is a liquid until it strikes the outside air, but instantly it lardens into silk. She cm spin sticky or non it icky lines, and can spin 'hem of several strands if she wants a strong guywire, or .if one or two strands if ;trength is not necessary. Un der her direct control is the sort of silk she produces. Those web-lines' that catch md hold insect prey are it icky, while the lines she .if.es for a highway bak and forth across the web are dry. leg Measurements She spaces the radii and 'he spokes by using leg meas urements. Placing one fore leg on a line already in place, me .spins another, and the distance between the lines will be the length of her rear NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS Sea led proposal! addressed in the Cily of Medlord. Oregon, and addressed "Prupoanl for comtruc lion ol a norm newer on Wood lawn Drive and Highland Drive." will be received at the office of the Citv Recorder until 1 1 00 a nt., Standard Time on the 2Mh day nf August. Oregon the spider, the farther apart will be the lines. She leaves an opening in the web, sort of a free zone, whereby she can be on cither side. In the web s center the garden spider will ipin a sheet of silk on which she will rest, head downward, while she waits for an insect to run into the web. She is a true "blue-blood." for her blood is a pale blue color because of the copper in her blood rather than the iron that helps to make hu man blood red.
