Chances are fairly good that the tag may still be on the article, even though you may have owned it for same time. The tag says "do not remove under penalty of the law," and while it hardly would apply after the article reaches the ultimate consumer, and al though the provision was in tended for the seller, the in junction seems to discourage many housekeepers from do ing away with it. Law Goes Way Back Most of the labeling laws date back many years; in New York State, the government includes a division devoted to enforcement here. At present, the information on the tag, for the business minded individual, may also give a clue to the tug of war between the makers of latex foam rubber and those of other foam products Xo gain the upper hand in the up holstery business. Robert L. McCann, direct or of the Division of Uphol stery and Bedding, New York Department of State, has said that there are many var iations in the state labeling laws. Some require that manu facturers tag upholstered fur-1 niture or bedding with labels I giving the names of the fill ers, others specify that per-! centages of each material used j as filler be listed. j These differences may not always appear significant to' the consumer, just so long as he has an idea from the label about what he's getting. To a manufacturer who merchan dises in several states, it may be important, because failure to observe the regulations ex actly could result in goods be ing declared "off sale." In New York State, Mc Cann's division acts as a clearing house for manufac turers here to make differ ences clear in various state laws. A manufacturer in doubt about regulations can go to his own state law di vision here, or in other states, and a division official can contact another state. McCann said that In 1961, state agents made 20.549 visits to inspect merchandise on store prom ises and placed 48.230 units off sale for various violations. NO FAIR New York - OIPIi - Certain states diverted about $400 million of last year's record $5.5 billion in state highway user taxes to non - highway uses, according to the Ameri can Petroleum institute. 01 Iwm r, -5 tt l . -jf Jrt? 3 "II '3 i b ' :: -1 r HOLIDAY STROLL - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy strolls along Amalfi pier with her daughter, Caroline, who clutches a toy Sicilian cart and her nephew, Anthony Radziwill. (UP1) Wardrobe Tips For College Given Students Surveys have shown that when a student's appearnace improves, study habits, grades, behavior and popular ity improve also. Every teen acer can be neav and well dressed, and it doesn't require a lot of money. "Carefully - chosen clothes are important because they give the teen aqer self-assurance and poise," according to Morse Gevanthor, style ex pert for Wales rainwear. "Re member that 'best dressed' and "most dressed' are not the same." Here are five rules to guide teen agers-both boys and girls-in selecting the right wardrobe and staying on top of the best dressed list: Plan your wardrobe: Note the occasions in your life that influence your clothes se lection, such as school, church, sports and dates. De termine how many outfits you need for each occasion. List Clothes List the clothes you now have and rate each item by its condition-good, fair or old. Line up your ideal ward robe with the list of clothes you have and you have a wardrobe plan. Have a wardrobe of inter changeables, such as blouses, skirts, sweaters, shirts and slacks that look well togeth er. This will make your ward robe go further and seem larger. To stretch your wardrobe budget, buy clothes with double purpose. A classic style wash and wear raincoat will be equally at home at school or on a date. An all weather top coat with a zip in lining will also span the seasons. . Tack Chart Tack a color chart on the inside of your clothes closet. It will keep you from reach ing for the wrong accessory and will remind you to buy clothes that are color keyed to the rest of your wardrobe. Dress appropriately for the occasion. For church func tions, boys should wear jack ets and girls should wear gloves and higher heeled shoes. Spectator sports call for informal school attire. Dates require a suit and tie, with dressier clothes for the girls. Once you've carefully se lected your outfit, forget it, says Gevanthor. Confidence and ease go together when a teen ager is well dressed. Sodium, from common salt, is used in nuclear reactors as a coolant.
