Teacher Killed
In Road Mishap
Sutherlin - A 33-year-old
high school teacher was killed
near here Friday when he was
run over by a truck.
Stale police said Wallace
Fletcher Parmalee apparently
jumped or fell from a water
tank truck which he was op
erating for the state forestry
department.
The accident occurred on
the Panther Creek forest ac
cess rd. east of Roseburg. The
accident was discovered by a
forester, according to reports.
Mr. Parmalee was a coach
and science teacher at Suther
lin High school, according to
relatives. During the summer
he had been employed by the
state forestry department. Fri
day was to be his last day of
work for the department.
Graveside services and
burial were scheduled at 4
o'clock this atternoon at Sis
kiyou Memorial park in Med
ford with the Rev. D. Kirk
land West of First Presby
terian church officiating.
Mr. Parmalee was born July
24, 1929. He was married to
Lois Jean Smith March 23,
1955. He is survived by his
wife and three children living
at home, Marsha Jean, Julie
Ann and Steven Wallace; his
parents in Fresno, Calif., and
fiv brothers.
Mrs. Parmalee is expected
tn move to Medford to be with
her parents.

It breaks down lo $10.50
for meals and snacks, $11 for
overnight lodgings, $7 for car
operation and $2.50 for tolls
and miscellaneous needs.
Also being encountered, in
many states, are higher taxes
on gasoline, cigarettes and
on purchases in general,
which are subject to sales
taxes in 37 states.
A "vacation tax map." is
sued by the Commerce Clear
ing House, shows gas taxes
ranging from 5 to 8 cents a
gallon.
Cigarette taxes, collected in
all bill three slates, begin at
2 cents a pack and reach a
high of 8 cents.
Range of Sales Taxes
As for sales taxes, they go
from a low of 2 per cent to
a lop of 4 per cent.
These are stale taxes. In
addition, there are the usual
federal taxes and, sometimes,
overlapping local levies.
In the state of Oregon, va
cationers are paying 6 cents
on gasoline, nothing in sales
taxes and nothing on ciga
rettes. Of much more importance
to the Jackson county car
owner than these trip expend
itures, is the bigger question
of how much It is costing him

his car.
