Nooauo 'aHOjaaw '3Nnaiai nvw cmojaaw MONDAY. AUGUST 20. 1962 FAMILY COUNCIL George H. - We still can't agree on now to pair off for our vacation. Kermil H. - If Dad save us the car there'a be no prob lem. George H. - We delayed want us all to pile in without elude our children in the ar rangements. We have a son, Kermit. who's 20 and a daughter, Ruth, a year young er. They were busy taking summer courses and we fig ured this would give us a chance to be together in a carefree way, before they re turn to college at the end of the month. But everyone has bright ideas on where to go and what to do, yet two things are agreed upon-namely, that it mustn't cost much because our Vacation Fund is prac tically nil, and also that there can't be much fun without the car. Taking it from there, I want us al lto pile in without much luggage and go camping somewhere rugged and in formal. My wife votes for a resort town instead, some where "civilized" she says. And the kids propose inviting other kids and just going sightseeing in the car, with my wife and I using the bus and trains. Kermit H. - This debate has been going on all sum mer and it certainly won't be settled to the satisfaction of all four of us. We're eacli lively individuals with decid ed tastes and it would be quite a stunt to work out a program to delight us all. First, we felt that Dad and I should go off alone on a fishing trip, leaving Mom and Ruth to enjoy a room at the shore where they can have summer theatre, movies, win dow shopping and plenty of rubbernecking. But then the folks harped on the idea of our doing something together It's a fine idea in theory, be cause we don't see each other very much during the year. But frankly Dad and Mom would be bored visiting bowl ing alleys with me, and glass factories with Ruth-places of special appeal for us. The best idea would be spending some time at home together, and then faring forth, they by bus and we kids by car, to inter esting spots. The Council: Nothing can immobilize and paralyze like indecision, and nothing breeds indecision so plenti fully as trying to please everybody! We're reminded of George Bernard Shaw's ob servation about the man who tries to write the perfect last will and testament. He "dies intestate." Just so, the H. fam ily will have no vacation at ail if they try to evolve one that's perfect for each-espec-ially with one car and scanty cash. There's no reason why this lively family can't sally forth to a few spots which have something for everyone, and some of them do. State parks offer that touch of nature Mr. H. craves, yet they're not all far from the towns and even big cities which call to Mrs. H. and the young adults. One idea we're glad to pass along is to center the trip around one tneme of unde niable attraction - say, trees, fences or waterfalls, or even mines, canneries or orchards. This helps the itinerary to al most write itself! Some tour ists trace their route from one shrine to another, the shrines being historic, religious or ar tistic. In the East, for ex ample, one can joggle from New Jersey to Massachusetts and gape at the birthplaces of James Fenimore Cooper, Walt Whitman, Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Long fellow along the way. In be tween there's bound to be those glassworks, bowling al leys and other fascinations Kermit mentions. Of course best of all for suiting every inclination are the periodic World's Fairs. Here a party can land in one piece and then permti its in dividuals In dart off on the tangents that tickle them. There's one still operating in Seattle (until Oct. 21) and the special feature for the H.'s. young and old. would be the number of free amusements and thrills. One can dabble with computers, ride rocket ships, test new cars, take in stant movies-thanks to expen sive industrial exhibits. But if the H.'s can t make it, well, we hope they can do the New York version of same in 1964 It's a way to be together and still have solo fun.
