Registration for New Rogue River Students Set This Week Rogue River All high school students and ait new elementary students enrolling in the Rogue River schools will register for classes Wed nesday through Friday, First grade students are asked to enroll Wednesday and Thursday In the Primary building. Alt first grade stu dents must bring a birth cer tificate or other evidence of age showing that they are six years old, or will be, on or before Nov, 15. Board policy allows no exceptions to this state regulation. First graders are also asked Regional Roundup by Clevs Twitchell Mail Tribune Regional Editor The November election in Jackson and Josephine counties appears to be shaping up as a lively one, par ticularly in the realm of local issues. Fluoridation of drinking water, always a subject of heated argument, has already been put on the ballot in Medford and may make the ballot in Ashland if a group of petitioners can come up with enough signatures by Aug. 28. Over in Grants Pass, another group of petitioners Is busy working against the Aug. 28 deadline to get a proposal before the voters to create a People Utility District in Josephine county for the purpose of reducing electric rates. The proponents of the PUD have to get 408 valid signatures, bul for them the job shouldn't be too difficult, because in order to get the PUD possibility to be studied by the state engineer last spring they had to circulate petitions and get at least 408 signatures. So they could, if necessary, go back and get those same 408 signatures all over again. A Freeway Takes Shape The drive from Medford to Grants Pass seems to be getting shorter every week. Almost every time we make a proposal before the voters to create a People's Utility the trip we are amazed to see the progress that has been made on construction of the stretch between the Rock Point area and the Seven Oaks junction west of Central Point, Only, two or three months ago that stretch was all two or three lane road. Now most of it has been widened to four lanes, resurfaced, and opened to traffic without causing much delay to passing cars. We can only re member having to stop once because of the construc tion work. How Well Do You Take Care of Your Lawn? Have you ever wondered who in town fakes good care of his lawn and who doesn't? There's nothing like a view from the air, provided you aren't up too high, to answer that question. We flew in close over Yreka the other day in a plane piloted by Warner Stewart, husband of one of our two Yreka correspondents, Dorothy Stew art. It was a bright, clear day and we could see rows of subdivision homes with tiny little plots of green in front and in back of most of them kind of a cute sight. The flight also included aa sweep over part of the Shasta Valley, which is a fascinating area to view from the air with its vast expanse of fields forming a patchwork of green, gold and brown. The Stewarts In form us that when flying from Siskiyou county to southern California it is interesting to see how the ter rain gradually gets browner as one flies south, Sacra mento seems to form a border between two worlds, they say. North of Sacramento the ground has many green areas, while south of there it gets extremely dry and brown. Robert and Helen Boftci To Leave Illinois Valley O'Brien - Robert Battel, senior plant quarantine in spector at Redwood Highway Inspection station, has been promoted to assistant public information officer of the California State department of agriculture. Inspector Boltet has been with the California State Bureau of Plant Quarantine for 26 years and a senior in spector at the Redwood sta tion for 14 years. Bottel will transfer to Sac ramento in Septe.nber lo start the new assignment which consists of movie making, press releases, TV and radio publicity, magazine editing and writing and speech pres entation. The Bollcl family will move from O'Brien and Illi- I nois Valley where they have j spent most at me last it vears. leaving several times but always returning to the valley and the Redwood sta tion. In 1948, when Bottel re ceived his discharge from the srmv thr-v settled in this area, nnni y bi.ct Rnifet fhs couple s two sons started to school here and graduated from Illinois Valley High school. They will both attend Oregon State university in Cnrvailis this fall. Daugh ters Suzy and Kathy started school in O'Brien and at Ev ergreen school in Cave Junc tion and on to Kerby grade school. They will continue in Sacramento. The Bottels have been ac- five In PTA and most of the valley's social and civic groups. Ail other elementary stu dents who did not attend in Rogue River at the close of school are especially urged to register in the grade school office in the primary building. All high school students who do not register at this time in the high school office will be signed for the classes which they selected in pre registration held last spring. Since state law forbids pur chase of high school textbooks by the district, certain fees will be collected at the time of registration. These fees are not compulsory, but each pro vides certain privileges which cannot otherwise be granted the individual student. A book rental fee of $8 is for the entire year or any portion thereof, and provides the regular textbooks, not workbooks, which would probably cost from $20 to S25 per student, school officials said. A $1.75 towei fee applies to those taking physical edu cation. The $4 student body card gives the student free admis sion to all home games, per mits admission to away-from-home games for student rates, and provides free admission lo the assembly programs finan ced by student body funds. A $10 fee is being charged for metai shop to cover the cost of oxygen, acetylene and metal. The schedule for the start of school is as follows: Thursday, August 30, all teachers report lo the Cafeter ia for an organization meet ing at 10 a.m. Friday, August 31, a worts day for the teachers. Tuesday, Sept. 4, classes will be held all day with the cafeteria and buses running on regular schedules. Attorney General Candidate Coakley Speaks at Yreka Yreka -, Judge Tom Coak ley, Republican candidate tor California state attorney gen eral, visited Yreka tor a luncheon last week and gave his opponent, incumbent Stan- lev Mosk, a going over. 'I'm not actually c'-irging him (Mosk) with being a sub versive," Coakley said, "but he and the organization he has honored with ins pres ence have been continuousiy soil on good law enforcement and in the forefront of efforts lo break down our traditions and values." Disagrees Coakicy made it clear that he disagrees almost entirely with Mask's philosophy. "It appears that Mr. Mosk wants not the job ot attorney gen eral but has his eye on the state Supreme court bench job," he said, adding that "the crime totals in Califor nia aione equal that of the combined states ol New York, Pennsylvania and New Jer sey." The judge said he opposes capital punishment. "It is only common sense that tells one that it IS a de terrent to crime," and wants wire-tapping made a legal tool for law enforcement officers to use in tracking down nar cotics users and pu? rs. In the field of stricer law enforcement on narcotics, he believes that there should be stiffer penalties for peddlers and pushers, with users taken off the street and put in jail until such time they can come back to a upeful hf Altacks ACLU The candidate asked the public to take a good look at his record. He said that he is proud of the fact that the "Daily Worker" in its Cali fornia edition after his win in (he primary election came out against htm. He said the paper had frequently praised Mosk. Coakicy issued an attack upon the American Civil Liberties union and its ef forts to challenge religious activity in public schools. He said he feared such efforts might eventually lead to the abolition of any mention of God in any public place, Mosk, on the other hand, has been a strong backer of the ACLU, Coakley charged. Coakley is s judge in the Mariposa County Superior court. He was accompanied to Yreka by his wife ard one of his four children.
