At least one entry from Sacramento' will be in the line-up of machines that be gin time trials at noon on the one-fourth mile dirt track located on Antelope road cjst nf Crater Lake highway in White City. Heat races are slated to commence at 2 p.m. Redding will have severai entries in the action as will Crescent City, Klamath Falls, Rnscburg. Brookings and Grants Pass. Officials predict 30 to 40 cars will be in the running in two divisions of competition. "B" Class racers will vie with the faster "A" class ma chines for top honors of the meet. Trophy dashes will be staged in- both divisions and two drivers will have their names recorded in the results as setting the first track rec ords on the new oval. Many of the entries will be the older models, mostly from the 1930s, that have been re built and modified to take the punishment of this type competition. The victory at Omaha left the Indians with a 10 1 2 game margin over the second-place Dodgers. He currently holds the track record at Crescent City, Calif., and recently par ticipated in the Tater-Cup classic, Meridian, Idaho. Gates open at noon today with heat races slated for 2 p.m. ciation and is the first race of this type held in the valley since the spring of 1960. The club is still working on the track. However, it has com pleted enough of the facilities to stage the affair. Bleacher seating will be available for some 800 fans, according to officials. Portland Loses To Hawaii, 11-3 Portland - IDPII - Outfielder Lou Jackson drove in three runs with three hits including a home run to spark Hawaii to an 11-3 victory over Port land in a Pacific Coast league baseball game last night. It was the Islanders' second straight win over the Beav ers. Jackson hit a solo home run in the sixth Inning. He also collected a triple and a single. First baseman Hap Ritchie added three singles for the Islanders. Six of Hawaii's runs were unearned as Portland commit ted four errors. The Islanders scored six runs in the eighth inning four of them un earned as the Beavers made three infield errors. Ben Johnson went the nine inning distance to pick up his 10th win in 15 decisions. Bill Griffin suffered the loss to run his record to 2-3. The teams end a four-game series with a doubleheader this afternoon. John James (1-2) and Ron Negray (2-2) of Hawaii will pitch against Norm Bass (3-1) and Bob Gig gie (7-10) of Portland. 1 V. Lead Taken By Salem By United Press International Salem parlayed three hits and four Lewiston errors into first place in the Northwest league Friday night. The Dodgers topped the Broncs 6-2 despite only three bingles and catcher Bill Kel so collected two of those. He drove in a run in the sixth with a single and added a two-run homer in the eighth. Lcwiston's runs came in the first inning on Bill Myer's two - run homer. The victory carried the Dod gers into first place, a half game ahead of Tri-City which was beaten by Yakima 8-6. Wenatchce topped Eugene 7-6 in 10 innings in the other game. Ethan Blackaby was the big sticker for Yakima. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth and also drove in three other runs with two singles. Rafael Gomez of Yakima con tributed a solo homer in the eighth. Sports Briefs BUCHAN CHAMPION Seattle - (UPli - Dave Bolles and his crewman John Ram sen of San Francisco won the fifth and final race Friday in the North American Star class Sailing regatta but the overall championship for the five - race event went to Bill Buchan of Seattle. Buchan, who leaves Sunday to defend his world title in Portugal, finished in eighth place in the final race. However, his point total for the five days of com petition was 94. BLAKELY WINS Victoria, B.C. (UP1) - Bill Blakely of Portland defeated Petei Mclntyre of Victoria in 19 holes in the finals of the Pacific Northwest Golf Asso ciation seniors' tournament Friday. Blakely, the medalist of the tournament, dropped in a birdie putt on the first extra hole of the scheduled 18-hole finals to capture the cham pionship. POSTPONED Vancouver, B. C. - UPH -The Little league final be tween Kailua, Hawaii, and San Jose, Calif., was post poned here Saturday and will be played Sunday. The win ner of the match will travel to Williamsport, Penn., for the Little World Series next 1 week. MEDFORD, OREGON Women's AAU Swim Marks Fall Chicago 'UPli World rec ords were the rule rather than the exception in the first two days of the National AAU women's swimming championships. World records were beaten in three of the six events held so far, and in one of the ex ceptions, diving, no world marks are recognized. Friday records toppled in two of the four swimming events, both to teen-agers, and an AAU record was tied in a third when a pair of West Germans, Wiltrud Urselmann and Ingrid Feujstack, finished one - two in the 200 meter breaststroke. The world rec ord performers were 16-yejr-old Ginnie Duenkel, Summi, N. J., with 2:32.1 in the 200 meter backstroke and Sharon Finneran. Los Angeles AC, in the 400 meter individual medley. Both marks, however, were short of other performances awaiting recognition as world marks. Miss Finneran did 5:21.9 In the medley three weeks ago compared to the 5:34.5 record of Donna De Varona and a clocking of 2:31.6 by Utako Tanaka of Japan awaits recognition to supersede her current record of 2:33.2. Schollander Shines The other world record per formance was 18:44 by Caro lyn House of the Los Angeles AC Thursday in the 1,500 meter freestyle. Men competing in an invi tational international meet in conjunction with the women's matches also were record minded. Murray Rose of Aus tralia was timed at 4:13.4 for the 400 meter freestyle In an exhibition against Alan Som ers, compared to the world mark of 4:15.9 by Jon Kon rads of Australia. Gerhard hetz of Germany was timed at 4:54 for the 400 meter individual medley compared to the recognized world mark of 4:55.6 by Ted Stickles of Indiana university. Forty-Niners Host Giants In Football Exhibition Today San Francisco rUPD The New York Giants, Eastern di vision champions, take on the San Francisco Forty Niners in Kezar stadium today. It's only an exhibition game, but a crowd of about 35,000 is expected mostly fans who are curious to see what Coach Red Hickey has come up with for the 1962 campaign. It's the only home exhibition for the Forty Nin ers this year. The Forty Niners go into the fray with a 1-0 record after upending Minnesota last week. The Giants were held to a 21-21 tie by the St. Louis Cards. Medford Receives Highway Funds Salem - Wt - More than $3 million in slate highway funds is being distributed to Oregon cities, Sec. or state Howell Appling Jr. has an nounccd. The amount represents 10 per cent of the highway rev enues from vehicle registra tion, gasoline taxes, transpor tation fees and fines for ve hicle law violations during the first six months of 1962. Amounts distributed range from $900,687 for Portland to $3.48 for Granite which is listed as having a population of 1. Among cities receiving mon ey were Albany, $45,953; Ash land. $32,108; Astoria, $36. 929; Bend, $41,269; Coos Bay, $24,493: Corvallis, 84.809; Eu gene, $181,433; Klamath Falls. $58,449; La Grande. $31,888; Medford, $87,316; Oregon City, $28,019; Roseburg, $42. Why, the coach even predict ed the club could win as many MEDFORDviVTRlBUNE OSU Eyes Grid Season Oregon State University Corvallis Tommy Prothro, winningest coach in western football, begins his eighth season as Oregon State head man when the Beavers launch grid practice on Sept. 1. In any event, a fall football at mosphere already is evident in Corvallis. Oregon State opens the sea son in Portland on Saturday night, Sept. 22, against a strong Iowa State eleven. The term "natural ' fits this con test, since cx-Bcaver top aide Clay Staplcton is head coach for the Cyclones and has elc vater Iowa State into one of the Big Eight's best teams. Prothro enjoys the distinc tion of being the only west coast coach listed among the top 25 winningest coaches in America. He has a 41-26-2 record, for a percentage of .612 in seven seasons here, and that also included two PCC championships. Oregon State went to the T-formation a year ago; Stapleton just recently switch ed to the T from the single wing. Iowa State has the 1961 national total offense leader in quarterback Dave Hopp mann; Oregon Slate has a po tential all-American in quar terback Terry Baker. The Beavers also play West Virginia and Washington in Portland, and have Corvallis encounters with University of Pacific, Colorado State and Oregon. West Virginia was ranked 12th nationally by one national magazine forecasl and figures to have Us best club in years. Tight Duck Regulations Imposed Washington - IUPI) - The in terior department Thursday imposed"- the tightest restric tions on duck hunting in its history. The department said the re strictions for the 1962-63 sea son were necessary because of low duck reproduction in the drought-stricken Prairie Pothole legion of Canada, which produces most of North America's wild ducks. Because there is evidence that the drought cycle may be reversing, the department said, the restrictions were de signed to asmre sufficient breeding stock to take advan tage of what is hoped will be improved water conditions next year. The Mississippi and Cen tral flyways will have the most restricted seasons - 25-day season as compared with 30 days last year.
