1957 Award of Merit Winner Youth Activities Week Planned By A quarterly conference will be held at the First Metho dist church tonight to consider the purchase of property. Also taking place tonight is the an nual Senior high Methodist youth fellowship ice cream social. The Senior high MYF youth activities week will be next week. Sunday the group will have a kidnap party; Tuesday, gub-district picnic at TouVclle park; Wednesday, choir prac tice and work night; Thurs day, communion service; and Saturday, a car wash. Sunday, Aug. 26, the church and youth groups will be hosts to 80 young people and counselors from Asbury Meth odist church, EI Paso, Texas, who will spend the night in the church on their way to the Seattle World's fair. Bids To Open For New Local Church Bids will be opened for the new First Baptist church Wednesday, Aug. 22, In the office of Edson and Pappas, architects. , The church building will be built on Crater Lake ave. at Stevens at. Cassels Writes Of Education In 'Look' An article by Louis Cas sels, religion writer for Uni ted Press International, whose articles regularly appear in the Mail Tribune, has been printed In the Aug. 28 iuaue of Look magazine. The magazine appeared on the newsstands Aug. 14. The article, titled, "A Way Out of Our Parochial-Public School Conflict," deals with the con cept in education - shared time - which may prove to be the solution to the long-standing conflict over federal aid to parochial schools and also the recent controversy result ing from the Supreme court decision against prayers in public schools. Included in the report is a study of the nation's first com prehensive lest of the shared time plan, which will lake place this fall In a suburb of Pittsburgh. Under the plan, children en rolled in parochial schools will take some of their courses In public schools, and some public -school children will spend part of each day in church-sponsored schools. Kirkland West will deliver the third sermon in the series on the five greatest questions in the Bible at the F i r at Presbyterian church, Eighth and Holly sis. Sunday, using as his sermon topic, "Whom Shall I Fear?" A quartet composed of Mrs. Herbert Hunter, soprano, Miss Diana Hunter, mezzo soprano, Paul Moore, tenor and Lynn Sjolund, bass, will sing, "Come Ye Disconsolate" and Mrs. Hunter will sing, "Calv ary." The Rev. David Brown, for merly of the Lakeside Pres byterian church in San Fran cisco, will assume his duties as minister of Christian edu cation Sunday. He and his wife will be welcomed at an informal reception at the cof- First Christians Set Picnic Dinner The First Christian church will hold a picnic Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jackson Hot Springs for all members and friends of the church. The picnic din ner is pot luck. Coffee and punch will be furnished, and people should take their own table service. During the afternoon a brief outline of the church program for the coming year will be given. The Rev. Frederick Ross Evans will preach at both services Sunday morning on the subject "The Magnificent Obession." It is based on Gal- atians 2:20. At 7 p.m. Dr. Leonard Mayficld will talk to the combined groups about his trip to Russia. Pastor Ordained, Organizes Church The Rev. Jack Arnold, minister of the First Free Will Baptist church here, was or dained in Huntington Park, Calif., Aug. 12. Mr. Arnold c.slablished the church in May. It is the first of the denomination to be organized in Oregon, and is located at 3310 North Pacific highway. The Arnold family is now living in Talent, but will move lo 3585 Robert rd., Med ford, next week. They have lived in the valley since October, 1961, when they came here from Huntington Park. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold have two children, Eddy and Sandra. Mr. Arnold is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvis C. Arnold, 534 South Fourth St., Central Point. He was educated in Glcndale, Calif., and received his ministerial training in Huntington Park.
