8 B - Students Research Park Grizzly Bears Yellowstone Park, Wyo. -(UPH Last summer two schol arly brothers succeeded in the ticklish task of attaching radio transmitters to the necks of two fierce 700-pound griz zly bears. This year, Montana State university biologists John and Frank Craighead are hoping for a scientific payoff to their little game of "bugging the bear." Purpose of the research to trace the unknown habits of the grizzly, which is dan gerously close to extinction. Civilization has reduced the grizzly population to about 1.000, excluding Alaska. An estimated 170 live in Yellow stone park. By "bugging'1 the bears, the Craighcads listen on ra dio receivers to "beeps," thereby plotting the move ments, feeding and mating of the huge animals. But the brothers say their informa tion may have more wide spread importance. Space scientists arc inter ested in the deep winter slumber of bears in hiberna tion. A study of the blood chemistry of grizzlies may shed some light on hardening of the arteries in humans. The Craigheads believe this should be a productive year for statistics. The past three years of their project have been devoted mainly to find ing s workable method of handling the animals. THUHSDAY. AUGUST 16. 1962 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. A Physician Looks at Aulomobilt Accidents t recently read in the Sta tistical Bulletin of the Metro polian Life Insurance Com pany that each year now automobile ac cidents lake some 38.000 lives and in flict disabling injuries on an a d d i t i o nal 1,400.0 0 0 persons. A fourth of Alvarci these deaths occur to men in their prime of life between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Of late, the psychologists studying the persons who are prone to have automobile ac cidents have learned if-at any one who has been 3rrested several limes for traffic vio lations, or who has social maladjustments, or has some unfortunate trait of personal ity, is the one most likely to have trouble. The first thought that comes to a physician is that the man who has auto acci dents probably has a poor muscular coordination or slow reaction time, or poor vision, but studies do not in dicate that these defects are the important ones. Also, it has been found that "repeat ers" (with a record of pre vious wrecks) account for only a small percentage of the automobile accidents. In Connecticut this number is only 3 to 4 per cent. It is the person who is in clined to disregard traffic regulations who is most like ly to have a traffic accident. Persons who never have been given a ticket rarely have a bad accident. In a certain study it was found that the number of accidents per dri- ! ver shot up from 0.167 for i those who never had had a i ticket to 1.001 for drivers I who had had five tickets. Speeding Highest Cause A study in Iowa also showed that anyone who has two or three traffic violations noted on his record is likely some day tn have a bad auto accident. "Speeding" has the highest association with acci dents; next comes "improper passing" and "failure to ob serve stop signs." Several times in my life I have nar rowly missed death when a man drove rapidly out of a side road without stopping as he should have done before entering a main highway. He and I both had a very narrow escape. Several studies have shown lhat persons who are maladjusted and hostile and unwilling to accept regula tions are likely to have auto accidents; also the 16-year-old boy is decidedly accident prone. This is particularly true If the boy often is truant from school, and has a record of one or mnrp court offenses some should be removed by a surgeon, with the "strip ping operation," but if they are not causing any trouble it may be thdt for a while they can be left alone. Often they dash through just after the light has turned red. many such persons are to a slight extent mentally ill. Ob viously, some day our licens ing agencies would do well to refuse a license to every man who has shown by his record that he has no respect for laws or regulations. Varicose Vein Surgery Hundreds of women ask whether they should have an operation on their varicose veins not because the veins are causing pain or swelling of the ankles, but because they look ugly. Usually 1 can not hazard an answer because the woman fails to tell me whether she is talking about the big, worm-like veins under the skin of her legs, or is talking about the little "spider" dark-blue veins under the skin on the outer side of her thighs. The big veins when trouble- can be found at many beauty counters and drug stores. It is the covering preparation that can completely hide a "port wine" birth mark on the face or arm.
