Larger Farms Total 54 Per Cent Figures Reveal Corvallis Only 54 per cent of Oregon's farms are classified as commercial, yet they sell 96 per cent of the state's farm products while the other 46 per cent, includ ing part-time and part-retirement, sell only 4 per cent, re ports Mrs. Elvera Horrell, Oregon State university exten sion agricultural economist. Citing figures from the 1959 U. S. Census of Agriculture, Mrs. Horrell noted that 42 per cent of sales come from 3 per cent of the farms report ing sales of $40,000 or more. Some 7 per cent of the farms reported sales totaling $20,000 to $39,999 or 21 per cent of all sales. Cattle and calves, wheat and dairy, in that order, ac. count for more than two-fifths of the cash receipts to the state's farmers, Mrs. Horrell stated. On the average, three out of four dollars received were required to operate and maintain the business. The median or "middle" in come of rural farm families in Oregon in 1959 was $4,824 as compared with $6,286 in the cities, she added. The census also revealed that Oregon farms vary from less than 10 lo more than 10,- 000 acres. The average holding is 500 acres with a value for land and buildings of about $42,000. Most of Oregon's farm oper ators are either full or part owners, with more than nine out of ten farmers in this cate gory, she said. A comparison with other years shows that in practically every measure ment except farm numbers and farm operators, farming in Oregon is growing, Mrs. Horrell pointed out. Other information revealed by the census shows that in 1959 some 84 per cent of the farms had telephones; 64 per cent reported home freezers; 71 per cent had trucks; 82 per cent owned tractors; and 87 per cent, automobiles, about half of Oregon's farms are along hard surfaced roads, about two-fifths on gravel roads, and the rest on dirt or unimproved roads. J. F. Short, director of agri culture, states the architect's preliminary plans for an Ag riculture building will be un veiled at this time. They have just been completed by Archi tect James Payne and this will be the board's first op portunity to view them. The board decided early this year to undertake a crash building program to relieve the crowded conditions facing the department. It hopes to gain a building appropriation from the 1963 legislature. Persons interested in vege table crops observed horticul tural trials in new varieties and variety improvement as well as work being done in the related fields of entomol ogy, plant pathology, soils and agricultural engineering, ac cording to A. A. Duncan, OSU extension vegetable produc tion specialist. Researchers were on hand at the OSU Vegetable Re search farm to answer ques tions and to explain the work da will include organization of an educational program on the need for a building, the current milk stabilization sit uation and routine reports in cluding preliminary 1963-65 budget estimates for the de partment. Those attend ing saw the bean root rot, yellow mosaic and rust breed ing and testing technique area. Breeding lines of peas were ready for observation as well as crucifer variety, breeding and cultural work. Also on view were much of the weed control work being done at the farm and entomological work on a wide variety of vegetable crops. Those attending inspected sweet corn hybrids and in- breds and new carrot varie ties and hybrids. Onion hybrid and pink root test plots were open to observation. In addition to the test plots open for inspection, research ers explained a current study of chemical placement in soils and discussed root dips for symphylid control, Duncan added. And besides, he likes horses. of party who drove X TUESDAY, AUGUST Home Fire Fatal To Washington Man Richland - ll'PO - A Richland man died Monday night from burns over 90 per cent of his body after a fire in his home Friday night. R. G. Norman, 54, died at Kadlec Methodist hospital here. Norman was pulled uncon scious from his burning home by two neighbors. Fire Chief Pat Quane said it is believed the fire was caused by an elec trical short in the kitchen. Pea of Innocent Entered in Killing Wenatchee - (UPD - Robert Duncan, 32, Wenatchee, Mon day pleaded innocent to first degree murder charges in con nection with the death of a Salem, Ore., man. PRODUCT DESIGN 167 W. 14. 1962 A 7 Corrupt Practices Charge Dismissed Salem -HPU- A charge of vi olation of the state corrupt practices act was di:mlssed in Circuit Court Monday against Lowell Wayne Hembree, an unsuccessful candidate for the state legislature from Mult nomah county. Dist. Atty. Hattie Bratzel Kremen asked the dismissal. Hembree was accused of making personal campaign expenditures in excess of those allowed by law. Mrs. Kremen told Circuit Judge George Duncan that Hembree made the expenditures from his own funds after his cam paign committee failed to raise funds necessary to meet his campaign costs.
