(UPI) TRANSFER APPROVED Newport News, Va. - iDPII -The Newport News School Board Thursday approved the transfer applications of 27 legroes to four white or pre dominantly white public schools. The board last year had assigned 14 Negroes to white schools under a gradual desegregation plan approved by a federal court. Davidson Asked To Clarify Stand Portland -(UPII- Republican State Chairman Phil Roth to day asked Democratic Nation al Committeeman C. Girard Davidson to clarify his own views on J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Rother referred to the re cent Western States Demo cratic Conference in Seattle, where W. H. Ferry, vice chair man of the Fund for the Re public, criticized the FBI and Hoover. Ferry termed their anti - communist efforts "spy swatting." Davidson, as chairman of the conference, invited Ferry to speak. Roth said Davidson should state whether he agrees with Ferry that the FBI is chasing mythical spies and saboteurs. If he does, Roth said, then Davidson "must also believe that Cuba ... is also an over rated myth and threat." Davidson said earlier he felt the advantage of Ferry's talk lay in the exchange of ideas fostered at the confer ence. Roth said other Democratic candidates in Oregon also should clarify their own stands on the Ferry talk. Ordinarily, this would mean that the new manage ment also was youthful. But the watchmakers can cite a different story. For the fiscal year ended in March, I960, Gruen Indus tries Inc., maker o fwatches, showed a consolidated net loss of more than $1.8 million. Then it got the new top man agement. Lost Reduced For the next fiscal year, the loss was reduced to a little over $500,000. For the 1962 fiscal year, up came a profit of more than $100,000. The men who were respons ible, Gruen officials say proudly, were both in their 60s when they took over the company. One was John H. Ballard, who after 110 years was being retired as president of Bulova Watch, and became president of Gruen. The other was Edward L. Love, former executive vice president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, semi- retired from the active finan cial community, who became chairman of the board. "Ballard came first, and then Mr. Love," recalled Ru dolph Epstein, vice president, secretary and treasurer who also came to Gruen after the change in management. Matters Out of Line "The figures showed what shape things were in. And there were a lot of matters that were out of line. "In two years, we reduced overhead by $250,000. "The Gruen plant in Swit zerland, perhaps the most modern in the world, was suffering from lack of busi ness. The company's credit situation was such that it often had to keep Its own plant waiting while it got up enough funds to buy some more watch movements. "Now it is going back into 100 per cent production, and we are trying to add capacity." Nedda P. stop moving Will he ever put, us around?; big the children will have a advantage over other There's no need for it. Arnold P. - I'll never stop trying to improve my chances. I move where things look bet ter. ... Nedda P. - Arnie and I have been married IS years, and we have three children. We both grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, and for the first three years of our marriage we lived in Harris burg. That was quite a change for me, but I got used to it and was glad that we were still at least in our home state. But for 12 years now, Arnie has been movinj us from town to town. There's no other reason for it but his restlessness. As a result, we all lose out in the end. He loses time looking for work. We lose money during the in-between-jobs time. The chil dren have gone to school in 10 different states, and their education is hit-and-miss. And we have no real home. We just rent furnished apartments each time. How can I help him make the best of it so our next move will be the last? Arnold P. - I'm a machinist, and I'm still young enough to keep trying to improve my self. 1 think I owe it to my self, and Nedda owes it to me, while we're under 40 to traipse around and study the field before we settle down and stay for good. After a year in one place, when I see there's no future I move on. Why should I stay wid waste my time? I figure on finding a new berth where I'll be happier. Meanwhile, I'm not harming Nedda or my children. It doesn't take me long to find work, and they get a chance to see the world. Once we really dig in and stay kids. All this travel will serve to increase their knowl edge. They're bright and will catch up once they reach high school and, I hope, college, too. Nedda must be patient. Her break will come soon. She's not that much of a migratory bird. Further, it's not much fun to "see the world" under a cloud of worry, poverty and fear. Your family aren't tourists. They're d i s placed persons, and, as such, a roof over their head is what their eyes are out to see, not the snow on Mt. Rainier or Ni agara Falls. We add our vote to Nedda's. It looks like there's something within Arnold that needs looking into - first by himself and then, if he can't see it clearly, by a counselor. We refer to his go-go-go urge, called "restlessness" by Ned da. Most fellows get that, in its extreme form, out of their systems before they marry. Otherwise they roam the earth, alone usually, or marry a like-minded gypsy who signs up for the itinerant life with her eyes wide open. But Ar nold is indulging his whims and fancies as though still single, while dragging along his obviously reluctant wife and children - excusing it all as being for their own "good." Stripped of all the fancy talk, his behavior is immature and selfish. First off, just because Ar nold can't see a "future" in a location is no reason to con clude there is no future there. Breaks can appear the result of luck and timing rather than strategy. Second, no matter how good things look, no matter how happy Arnold is on a job. he II come : to a slump, a dull discour ; aging stretch. Most of us take 'this in stride.
