II In t L J I X i 4 iff i ' 1 NEW APARTMENTS The Yorkshire Apartments, 83ti Taylor ave., will be open to the public today, Saturday, and Sunday, according to Fred York, Eugene, owner of the new structure. The 22-unit apartment house will be managed by Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Gwinn, Medford. The unit Includes four two bedroom and 18 one bedroom apartments. Each apartment Is individually insulated for sound-proofing, it was reported. Reapportionment Foes Name Officer Porlland-llil'li- Mrs. William S. McLennan, wife of a Port land attorney, today was an nounced as executive secre tary of the newly-formed bi partisan committee to fight proposed r e a p p o rtinnmcnl changes for Oregon. The reapportionment meas ure which will be on the No vember ballot, would take land area into account as well as population in allotting j seats in the Oregon house. ' Mrs. McLennan termed the rneasure "nothing more than a scheme to grant unfair over representation to low popula tion areas, primarily in East ern Oregon." She said this would be done only at the ex pense of the more densely populated areas of Western Oregon. 4-H NEWS Grange Hews ! We visited Abbot Butte lookout and also Huckleberry j Gap. We learned about ber ries that are sale to eat. A wild flower collection was started for next year. In the evening we modeled our pajamas and sang songs. On Sunday, our guests for a picnic lunch were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Winniford and Bil ly, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Franek and Tom Dorsey. After lunch we entertained our guests with comedy songs and skits. Before breaking up camp we presented Mrs. Ricks wiln a gift certificate tor her birth day. Dorothy L. Trade Adds Land To Lookout Park 1 Salem-tUPP-A trade of Linn county land for park land ad jacent to Netnrts Spit In Til lamook county has been ap proved by the State Highway commission. The trade means that the stale will add 405 acres of coastal property to adjoining Cape Lookout State park. In exchange the state gave 143 acres of irregularly spaced blocks of land near Casca- dia State park on the South Sanliam river. ' The forest land Is not a part of the present Cascadia Park development. Barge Operator Opposes Rail Rates Washington-il'Pl)-An Oregon barge operator told Congress Thursday railroads would drive Columbia river barge operators out of business if the railroads were allowed to cut rates to a minimum. Lew Russell, president of Tidewater Barge Lines, Port land, testified before the House Interstate Commerce committee in opposition to legislation to eliminate mini mum rate control by the Inter state Commerce commission. "Remove minimum rate control on bulk commodities when moving by rail and I am certain that barge operation on the Columbia river will cease to exist," Russell said in a statement. Long Designates Proposal West Point Football Bill Washington-fllPJ-The Senate Thursday approved a bill which Sen. Russell B. Long charged would allow the Army and Air Force acade mies to stock up with "foot ball players rather than with good potential officers." The measures cleared by voice vote despite the Louisi ana Democrat's objections. It goes back to the House for ac tion on Senate changes. Long called the bill the "West PoinT Football Bill." It would authorize the two academies to appoint about 50 additional cadets a year to replace dropouts. The bill was passed Thurs day by a voice vote in the Senate, despite Long's objec tions. The measure does not apply to the Naval Academy, In addition to giving the two academies more leeway to fill vacancies caused by dropouts, the measure extend ed from four to five years the period of active duty for all academy graduates. Long concentrated his fire on West Point, where Paul Dietzel is coaching after breaking a long-term contract at Louisiana State University. Long insisted he had "no complaint about Dietzel leav ing LSU." He also accused West Point of breaking the law by per suading members of Congress to appoint cadets from other states. He said the law re quires that the appointee btt from the congressman's own district. He complained of "unethi cal recruiting" practices by Army, asserting that it has in duced athletes to break con tracts with other schools and accept West Point appointments. St. Louis, Mo. -IUPII- A truck load of beer cartons was delivered Thursday to the Washington University li brary. Librarians hastily ex plained the cartons were empties and would be used to transport 400,000 books to another building.
