CAR DEALERS BOOST SERVICE AD EXPENDITURES. New car dealers have boosted their advertising expenditures promoting service, indicates a survey by Automotive News. The increased investment has come about because of keener competition from non-dealer service businesses. Among dealers surveyed, 69 said they are spending more for service advertising than they did a year ago. reports Adver tising Age. About two-thirds of the dealers reported they were up against heavy promo tional competition from non-dealer outlets. Of the new car dealers, 32 use 107o or less of their advertising budgets to promote service: 16 allocate between 10 and 20; 29 of the dealers invest between 21 and 25; and 23 use more than 25 of their ad budgets on service. SEARS AGAIN INVESTS MAJOR PORTION OF AD BUDGET IN NEWSPAPERS. Sears, Roebuck & Co. invested $53 million in newspaper advertising space in 1961. re ports Ashley Of fill, manager, media research division of the retail sales promotion and advertising department. THERE ARE SOME 55 MILLION MEN 20 and over, with a 13.7 orowth oroi.ct.d bv 1970. for a total of over 61 million, reports Printers' Ink. The fastest arowino orouo (20 to 34 years) will expand by almost 25 in the coming decade, The 35-49 year group will increase by 0.7; the later middle year group will expand by 16.2; the retire ment age 65 and up is expected to gain bv 14.8. The male consumer accounts for tremendous sums of money spent on products strictly for his own use or lor whose pur- cno.e ne is largely responsible. These range from some $10.5 billion spent annually on men's clothing and footwear, to $165 million laid out for cigars. Equally .mpun.m is ine racr mat ine U.S. male is raising his voice again in family buying decis ions. Many researchers feel that thore has been a reversal in the trend that saw women making more and more of the family purchasing choices. This has been reflected in the purchase of autos. The swing back toward bigger ears and the promotion of sports fea tures like bucket seats, even in family sedans, reflects resurgence of the male in the decision-making role. There is also increasing evidence thai men are getting more involved In purchases once exclusively female. A recent survey by Coordinated Marketing In 2.000 outlets belonging to 19 supermarket chains showed that 25 of all transactions involved men. Electric Fishermen Ssek To Get Steelhead Bill Off November Ballot Salem - lUPIi - Commercial fishermen Monday filed a suit in Marion County Circuit Court here seekinu to get the steelhead game fish measure off the November ballot. The suit, against Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr., contends the measure is In valid, lacking the necessary number of valid signatures. The Oregon Supreme Court rewrote the ballot title that had been issued by Atty. Gen. Robei t Y. Thornton, and Mon day's suit charges that the signatures obtained under till old ballot title were illegal. This would mean the group .sponsoring the measure didn't have enough signatures to get It on the ballot. 20.000 Hold Valid The suit claims that 34.000 of the 54.000 signatures were invalid. That would leave only about 20, OP J valid sig natures, and 43,000 are needed. The suit was filed by the ams Co., Portland Fish Co., Bumblebee Sea foods, Inc., Barbey Packing Corp. and William E. Westerholm. The ballot measure would restrict the steelhead catch commercially on the Colunv bla river, and would declara steelhead to be a gamefish in Oregon. Appling issued a statement, saying "it is regrettable, and undoubtedly a hardship on those most concerned with the proposed ballot measure, that the faultiness of Mr. Thorn ton's titling and the necessity of the court drafting a new one has cast a cloud on ths legality of this matter." Maasur Ctrtiliad Appling said Thornton told him he had no authority to reject signatures obtained on the initial petitions which car ried Thornton's ballot title. Appling accepted them along with signatures obtained on later petitions, and has certi- Supply Co. 42 on. Eiimu Saioi union Msnermen a t.oopera. 1I1.37.
