Romney Issues Stinging Repudiation of John Birch Society Gosse Pointe, Mich. -lUPD-l "I'm not trying to dictate " gan political leaden as Paul ! orecinct detente- John Fi. I rr.ir th. i, .i.-.. .. . ... J George Romney, Republican candidate for Michigan gov ernor, Saturday issued a sting ing repudiation ot the John Birch Society and called for the ouster of a powerful GOP leader active in the controver sial organization. "George Romney is not pre pared to become identified in any way with Welchism," Romney told a gathering of 14th District Republican lead ers in a stormy session that pitted his popularity against that of Wayne County (De troit) GOP power Richard Durant. About 200 district leaders were present as Durant and Romney locked horns. "If the delegates reelect this man (Durant) or delegate to him the responsibility of lead ership, then you will have re pudiated me," Romney said. His challenge came after he and Durant met for more than an hour in a private confer ence. During that time Rom ney, as he had done on previ ous occasions tried to per suade Durant to step down. But Romney, mentioned fre quently as a GOP presidential darkhorse in 1964, apparently failed to win Durant over and be made his appeal to party leaders to oust Durant. Romney said. "It's up to the delegates to elect the people they want as leaders. But I appeal to you not to elect to real or ostensible leadership such a man." Durant ignored Romney ef forts to get him to resign and read a prepared statement in which he said "it distresses me deeply to see Republicans quarrelling with one another." He added that he was "person ally proud to be a party of the army of people" who will elect Romney this fall. Although Durant is vice chairman of the district organ ization, there is no dispute that he is the real boss. No mention was made of District Chairman Stanley J. Baldwin, but he is a Durant supporter and presumably would step down if Durant were ousted. Precinct Delegates The showdown in the power struggle will come Aug. 15 when GOP precinct delegates are elected at the district par ty conventions. The delegates elect district officers. Pro-Durant forces are op posed by an anti-Durant group calling itself the Republican Action Commitee. The anti-Durant forces In clude such prominent Michi- BivVl itwn. ,1m. r.np V.n. ! SECTION D Medford PAGES 1 to 8 Tribune MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, JULY 29, 1962 Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. W ATKINS (Register and Tribune Syndicate 1962) ESS mm Colony of Cankerwormt Deftly Dodged Bird As if measuring the actual distance from the trunk to the first group of tender green leaves of the fruit tree, the cankerworm looped outward along the branch. It wasn't alone: several of its fellows looped alongside, behind and before, all headed toward the edible destination. Sensitive to every and all outside disturbance, the worms heard or sensed the soft swish of bird wings. The members of the worm group immediate ly stopped their forward prog ress and assumed the protec tive measures characteristic of their kind. Some deliberately leaped from the limb and fell toward the ground for a few feet, brought to a springy stop by a thread of silk they had ejected from their mouths as they fell from the branches-a line they had previously attached to the limb for just such an emer gency. They teetered up and down on the end of the elastic cord. The bird, aiming for a worm on a limb missed its target. Danger Passed The swish of bird wings, passed on-but the canker worms swung gently at the end of their lifelines. Slowly the knowledge came to their sluggish nervous systems that the danger had passed. The cankcrworms, suspend ed from the support by the silk cords, began winding the line, using the mouth parts they wrapped the lifeline around and around their fore limbs, at the same time ele vating themselves back up to the tree limb. Once there, they resumed the journey toward breakfast, lunch and dinner. All were back in business i again. j Soon comes the day when they will drop off into a deep i sleep to transform themselves and later emerge as slender bodied, gray or brown geo metrid moths. The so-called "fall cankerworm," the eggs j of which are laid by a wing-, less female, will emerge from their place in the earth in the fall. Others will emerge in the spring from eggs laid the previous fall. A colony of cankerworms can completely defoliate a shade or fruit tree. They have been at times serious pests in fruit orchards. These were the obnoxious worms the import ed English sparrow was ex pected to destroy. Part of the trouble was the deceptive manner in which the worms behaved in imi tating a twig or hanging by a thread. The poor bird just couldn't always find them.
