8 A 1957 Award of Merit Winner mm National Solace of Prayer Is Unity Sermon Topic The solace of prayer in time of doubt provides the theme for the sermon planned for Sunday at the 11:13 a.m. wor ship hour in Unity church, Haven and Holly sts. by the Rev. Katharine Bosworth. Her sermon title Is "What To Do With Doubt." The text will be from James 1:5. Church school classes pre cede the sermon, with a 9:45 a.m. starting time scheduled. Witnesses Atlend District Assembly Harlan S. Nixon, president minister of the Mcdford Je hovah's Witnesses congrega tion, will head the Mcdford rinlnffatinn of 135 persons to the district assembly at Eu reka, Calif., July Z7 to zh. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gor man, their children and grand children will be included In the delegation. Gorman is the oldest member of the congre gaton and is 88 years old. Purpose of the convention, according to Nixon, is to en able all in attendance to be equipped with knowledge, faith and ministerial zeal. Dugan from Jehovah's Witnesses world headquarters In New York. Advent Christian Announces Subject "God's Guidance" will be the 11 a.m. message by the Rev. Fred O. Sapp Jr., pas tor of the First Advent Chris tian church, Sunday at the worship service. The children will go to the Junior church chapel at 11:30 a.m. for a mis sionary story. Sunday school will begin at fl:45 a.m. with classes for all ri;ps from three to adult and n nursery for those under three. The Penny banks for the Vacnlion Bible school fund will be returned again this week. So for 23 books of the Bible have been put up on the chart. The Doctrinal class will not meet next week. JULY 27. 1962 THI IRfH NFWS Religion Publicity Council Advenlists Give Financial Report San Francisco, Calif. - Fol lowing the ancient Biblical custom of tithing all their in come (giving one-tenth to the church), Seventh-day Adven tists gave $223,845,402.51 to their church during the last four years. In making his report to the 49th world conference of the church now meeting in San Francisco's civic auditorium, Chester L. Torrcy, treasurer of the General Conference of Advcntists, staled that dur ing the past quadrennial peri od "the funds for our world work have been the largest in our history." In addition to tithe, Torrey reported, a total of $64,438, 852.44 was given in mission offerings, making a grand to tal of more than $288 mil lion. Appropriations from head quarters to the world - wide work of the church during the past four years have amounted to $108,820,930 34 as compared with $84,261, 391.11 for the previous four years. In this figure is in cluded financial support for many American projects as well as for 185 other coun tries. Torrey gave his report be fore more than 10,000 persons attending the 10-day church business session being held in civic auditorium. A total of 1,000 official delegates repre sent 198 countries of the world. Other members are pres ent In an unofficial capacity, helping to swell the attend ance figure at the convention to 25,000 on week ends. Some 100 countries are represent ed from the church's ten world divisions. First Methodist Topic Is Announced D r . George Roscberry, minister, will preach on "Con quering Outer Space" at both worship services at First Methodist church Sunday morning. At the first service the youth choir will sing "O, Lord, Most Holy" with the solo by Miss Jean Banks. The solo at the second service will be "My Shepherd Will Sup ply My Need" sung by Miss Lynn Ferrell of Ashland. The Senior High Methodist Youth fellowship will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the church. Camp Meeting Under Way in Rogue River Rogue River - The Church of God (Holiness) camp meet ing started yesterday and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 5 on the church grounds at Third and Broadway sts., Rogue River. Regular Schedule Set By Catholics The regular monthly Sacred Heart and Fatima devotions will take place in Sacred Heart Catholic church next week end, with services be ing scheduled to accommodate as many parishioners as pos sible, according to the pastor, the Very Rev. Carl Mai. First Friday masses, Aug. 3, will be at 6:30, 8 and 11 a.m. and at 6 p.m. Holy Com munions are received and masses offered on this day "in reparation for the ingrati tude and coldness of men toward the goodness and mercy of Christ and the love which is symbolized in His Sacred Heart." Following the 8 a.m. mass on Saturday, Aug. 4, the rosary and litany of the Bless ed Virgin will be recited for the conversion of Russia and the defeat of atheistic com munism. The weekly Perpetual Help devotions and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Missionaries To Be Guest Speakers Central Point-The Rev. and Mrs. William Mallon and fam ily, missionaries to New Gui nea, will be the guest speak ers at the 11 a.m. worship hour at the Community Bible church, Fourth and Alder sts., Central Point. Mr. and Mrs. Mallon arriv ed here from the Dutch New Guinea field Wednesday. This is their first furlough since being sent to the mission field In 1958. They have been serving under The Regions Beyond Missionary union with headquarters in Phila delphia. A youth night featuring young people from the Junior High, Senior High and Young Adult groups, will conduct the 7:30 p.m. service at the Community Bible church. Musical Group To Sing af Conference The Ambassadors, a musical group from Multnomah School of the Bible, Portland, will present a varied program of vocal and Instrumental music Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the Wil low Prairie Bible conference, Camp 2, near Butte Falls. The concert will start at 7:30 p in. and the public is in vited, according to Garland R. Shinn, American Sunday school union missionary. The student musicians, four men and three women, will offer a variety of gospel music and spirituals. His sermon is titled "Peter, Paul, and Social Action" and is based on Paul's writings found in Romans 13. The mes sage will seek to meet the problem and develop the Christian solution to the Issue of "what responsibility does our church have in social ac tion?" Welsh hymns will be sung during the service and the solo "Suffer the Little Chil dren" will be by Mrs. Charles Champlin, soprano. Carver, pastor of the Apostolic Faith church, Third st. and Central ave., is home after three weeks at the annual camp-meeting-convention of the headquarters' church in Port land. Hundreds of people attend ed the camp from many states throughout United States and from seven foreign countries. Among the speakers was the Rev. Arthur G. Allen of To kyo, Japan, who was heard here in Medford in May, 1955. Of the several teachings given by Mr. Carver at the camp were "Making Paths Straight," and the "Second Coming of Christ." Assistant pastor, the Rev. Clifford Frie sen, gave three evangelistic messages. After reluming here July 23, Mr. and Mrs. Carver and their three daughters and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Tyson Jr., Linda and Rebec ca Sue, drove to the church's Wagner Creek Youth camp to join Mrs. Carver's rela tives who are in Medford to attend their family reunion. Regular services will be held in the Medford church Sunday, with Sunday school at 9:30, worship r,t 11 a.m., young people's meeting at 3 p.m. and evangelistic service at 7:50 p.m. Two Churches List Coming Activities Central Point - "The Na ture of the Christian Faith" will be the title of the ser mon to be preached Sunday during the 11 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyter ian church in Central Point. Following the worship service a coffee hour will be held in the Church Fellowship hall. Jacksonville - The First Presbyterian church, Jackson ville, will hold an all Sunday School-Church picnic Sunday afternoon on the Applegate river. Persons who plan to attend the picnic will meet at the church at 1 p.m. for transportation. The picnic will be potluck, and the afternoon will consist of games and swimming. Fredrick Ross Evans will preach at both services Sunday morning at the First Christian church on the subject "The Father in Heaven." The youth choir will sing at the first service. Mrs. L. George Bannister, Miss Anne Bannister and Miss Mary Bannister will sing "In Heav enly Love Abiding" at the second service. Mrs. Beatrice Church and Mrs. Clyde Sturgill will be hosesses at the coffee hour. Several members of the Junior department will leave Sunday afternoon for a week at Little River Christian camp. Figures in the re port of Dr. W. D. McGraw, superintendent of the Oregon Pacific district, indicated that the district membership now stands at 6,724 and Sunday school membership at 13,931. The district assumed the goal of $80,000 to be raised for general budget during the coming year. The Rev. Harold M. Sanner, pastor of the local First Church, which is located at 520 North Holly St., will speak at Sunday's 11 a.m. service on "Our Cenlral Pur pose." At the 7 p.m. service Sunday he will speak on the subject "Castaways." Music for the morning serv ice will be the sanctuary choir singing "Worthy is the Lamb" and a duet will be presented by Mel Johnson and Dean von Stein. The quartet is being sponsored by the local youth fellowship whose plans include a time of refreshment and fellowship after the program.
