Stew Schoeder Edges Astoria Man in Golf Astoria -UPI- Medalist Stew Schroeder of Medford charged through the first round of the Oregon Coast Golf Tour nament Monday with an 8 to 6 victory over George Abra- hamson of Astoria. He was joined in the sec ond round today by defending champion Ralph Dichter of the host Astoria Golf and Country Club, who topped Bob Girtle, Portland. 3 and 2. John Kennedy of Salem, last year's runner-up topped Dick Schneider, Longview, Wash., 3 and 2. Two first round matches went past the 18-hole mark. Doug LaMear of Oswego birdied the 19th to beat Sev Harkson, Oswego, and Rich ard Kari, Baker, had to go 20 holes before beating Perk Paulson of Portland. Sue Jennett of Oswego won medalist honors in the wom en's qualifying round with a three-over par 77. However, defending women's champion June Robinson, Albany, play ed a practice round and shot a 72. Miss Robinson was ex empt from qualifying. The men went into their second round of match play today, while the women s di vision was idle. Eastern Oregon Fires Reported By United Prast International A 1,500 acre fire burned east of Bend today - one of at least SO touched off by lightning in the dry Eastern Oregon forests and range lands Monday night after a day of 100-degree temperatures. The worst fire covered 1.500 acres of range and dry brush on Pine Mountain 30 miles east of Bend. A ranger at the Forst Rock station said it was believed coming under control. He said the Bureau of Land Management had taken over fighting the Pine Mountain fire. About 40 more men were to be brought in if necessary. A 25-acre forest fire at Luna Butte about 12 miles south of Bend was reported under control this morning. A for est ranger said large amounts of borate were dropped on the flames during the niqht. The Forest Service said most of the other blazes were small and were under con trol. The mercury soared to 102 in Pendleton Monday. Med ford had 100, The Dalles and Roseburg 100. Eugene 95 and Portland 91. Fire danger re mained high with another scorcher forecast today in Eastern Oregon. Bud's Tire Exchange 1600 N.
