Driver Improvement School Is Reviewed by Interested Groups About six months ago the Medford municipal and Jack son county district courts started a driver improvement school. Since that time, 178 Jack son county residents have completed the four session monthly school and have re ceived certificates. Whether the school was suc cessful was one of the ques tions discussed last week dur ing a review session attended by Medford city police officers and Jackson county sheriff's deputies who are instructors for the school, District Judge L. L. Sawyer and Municipal Judge J. F. Fliegel, and oth ers. Few Statistics Few actual statistics re garding individual driving records of those who have at tended the school are avail able, it was pointed out, since at least a year should pass before such Information will be compiled. However, of those who at tended the school, only three persons have been cited into court for traffic violations since they completed the course. Judge Sawyer explained that in such cases, he rec ommends suspension of the individual's operator's license for periods ranging from 30 o 90 days. In other cases, the maximum fine is assessed. Student Reaction The judges reported that student reaction to the school has continued favor able. Some who have been or dered to attend the school have taken the time after com pleting tile course to speak in favnr of it to the judge. Medford Police Capt. Clyde Ficiilner, school supervisor, and the judges commented on widespread interest in the school. With Hie exception of Eugene, which recently starter! a similar program Medford is the only commu nity to have such a school. Captain Fichtner reported that the traffic safety divi sion of the state motor ve hicle department has asked about the school and is watch ing its progress. Judge Flie gel mentioned that city and district judges expressed in terest in the program at a state meeting earlier this year. Volunteers May Attend All interested persons may attend the school, it was stressed, and A number of volunteers have attended the school so far. While the num brr of volunteers has drop ped since the January ses sions, law enforcement offi cers and Ihc two courts rnn tinue tn receive telephone rails seeking information ahiml i The indues noted that some persons who are cited m'n rourt have a-ked In atlrnd the school even before a tine has been assessed. Chief of Police Charles P. Chnmplin felt that the school is an important proiect. men tioning that it is invaluable as a public relations program particularly with the young er students netting to know the police officers who in struct the school. Held on Tuesdays The school is held each Tuesday evening, staring with the first Tuesday in the month and continues for four weeks. The sessions are hrM in the county rourthouse audi torium and mrr Irom 7 to t.!0 p m. The classes include instruc tion in the Oregon Driver's manual, driver attitudes, psy chological effects, insurance, driver's age, traffic volume, defensive driving, Oregon traffic laws, motor vehicle equipment and driver license requirements. A number of films are also shown. The instructors, in addition to Captain Fichtner, are Med ford Police Officers Gene De puy and George Lucas and Sheriff's Deputies Bill Rice and Carl Perdue. Recently compiled by the school's staff was a defen sive driving booklet which is distributed to students attend ing the school. AT LAST!
