Influential Lady She has been one of the leading figures in helping him get the new republic on the ground. Some critics claim the j petite brunette has too much influence on the president. Rumors also have circulated in Saigon from time to time that she and her husband are connected with illegal finan cial dealings involving U, 3. foreign aid. Madame Nhu dis misses these by saying: "These stories are put around by communists and then taken up by irresponsible cowardly sections of the community and given credence." These ru mors have never been accom panied by any proof. Diem faces (rouble not only from the communists but also internal unrest which erupts from time to time In opposi tion to his alleged autocratic reign. Twice within the last year and a half, his presidential palace has been attacked, each time by members of his own armed forces.
