1957 Award of Merit Winner IE CHURCH NEWS National First Methodists Schedule Vacation Bible School Tlie annual Vacation Church ichool held by First Methodist church, will begin Monday, July 23 and continue until Aug. 3. There will be classes for four-year-olds through the sixth grade. The school will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration will be held in the Church School annex Sunday. Dr. George Roseberry will preach on "Wait Upon the Lord" at both Sunday serv ices. The youth choir will sing "Once to Every Man and Na tion" at the 9:30 a.m. service. Soloist will be Ralph Van Horn. Trinity Baptist Youth Plan Trip The High School young peo ple of Trinity Baptist church are planning to go to San Francisco Aug. 3 to S for a youth, retreat. The trip will cost each of the young people $18. In order to earn the money for this trip, they are doing baby-sitting, house cleaning, lawn cutting, car washing and waxing, or any odd job that persons might want done around the house. Those who would like their services should call their youth spon sor, Russ Carr, 773-5251. Sunday two of the young people. Dale and Roger Hock' ersmilh, will play an instrU' mental duet, "I'm a Child of the King," at the 11 a.m. wor ship service. Pastor Bruce O. Rogers will give a message en titled "Gods Pattern for the Christian Household." The scripture portion will be Ephcsians 6: 1-9. Youth groups and a class In theology for laymen will meet at 7:30 p.m. At 8:15 p.m. Pastor Rogers will lead a Bi ble study from Mark 8:22 9:29, entitled, "The Truth about Jesus." Trinity Baptist church is located at the corner of Grif fin Creek and South Stage rds. Professor To Speak At Central Church Gerald Parriolt, professor at Platte Valley Bible college, Scottsblutf, Neb., will be the guest speaker Sunday at 7:30 pm. at Central Church of Christ, 1440 South Oakdale ave. He will also show a mo vie film emphasizing the medical missions department of the college. Mr. Parriott and John V. Heberling, minister of the church, were college class mates in San Jose, Calif. Other services Sunday In clude Bible school at 9:45 a m. and worship at 11 a m. Mr. Heberling will give the message at the worship serv ice. Junior church will be conducted at the same hour by Howard Ramsey, summer student minister. Junior and Senior youth groups will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The Senior High young peo ple will leave Monday morn ing for a week of Christian camp at Dead Indian Soda Springs. Both Mr. Heberling and Mr. Ramsey will be in camp with them. Christian Science Lesson Topic Told The eternal nature of true beauty and goodness will be emphasized at Church of Christ. Scientist, 100 Wind sor ave , 11 a.m. service Sun day. Opening selections from the Bible, in the lesson-sermon on "Life" will include verses from Pralm 36. Young people up to the age of 20 are invited to attend Sunday school. Church of Christ Lists Sermon Topics Lloyd Bridges, minister of the Church of Christ. 1701 West Main st., will speak at the 10:45 a m. worship hour Sunday on "The Great Spy." The 7 p.m. service topic will ask the question "What Is Your Name?" Bible classes for all ages meet Sunday at 9:45 a.m. The older adults will have a new teacher, M. O. Gwinn, as they begin a new phase of study on faith. Bible classes also meet for a study period Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The youth group continues to meet Sunday evenings after the worship service and Tues day evenings for fellowship and recreation. They will meet at the church at :30 p.m. and go for a bike hike. Pastor Assumes Duties at Church The Rev. Vernon Hanson has assumed duties as pastor of Ascension Lutheran church, 2501 Barnett rd. A graduate of Lulher Semi nary, St. Paul, Minn., last month, Mr. Hanson is a native of Seattle. Wash. He is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran university, Tacoma, Wash., and served two years in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hanson, his wife, Mar lis, and the couple's one-year-old son, Erik, are living at the parsonage, 317 Black Onk dr. Mrs. Hanson is i ;nidunle of the University of Minne sota and has taught elemen tary grades for five years. The new minister follows the Rev. Elvin S. Tnllcfson, organizer and first pastor o( the local congregation. Eastwood Schedules All-Church Picnic Sunday at Eastwood Bap tist church, 1390 Ridge Way. the pastor, the Rev. Clifford J. Young, will give the mes sage, "This Same Jesus." based on Acts 1:1-11. Mis sionary moments will present a report from the Naga Hills of Assam. Hendricks, a missionary of the United Christian Missionary society, will be guest speaker at the 10:55 a.m. service at the First Christian church Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks first went to Japan in 1921 and have been there continu ously with the exception of the World War II years and furloughs. Since 1946 Mrs. Hendricks has been on the faculty of the Margaret K. Long Christian High school for girls which has more than 1.000 students. She has also devoted much time to dis tributing relief and rehabili tation supplies from Ameri can churches to destitute Jap anese. The Rev. Frederick Ross Evans will preach at the 8:30 Congregational Meeting Planned After Service The Rev. Robert W. Tull, minister of the Congregation al church, 2100 Oakwood dr., will preach a sermon Sunday at 9:30 a.m. entitled, "Pa tience and Passion." During the worship hour, pre-school children will be cared for in Pilgrim house. First through fourth graders will have their class in the parsonage with Mrs. Bohncrt from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. a congrega tional meeting will be held. An offer received to purchase the church's present property will be voted on by the con gregation and two brief amendments to the church constitution will be consider ed. They have been proposed in correspondence with the church's recently drafted ar ticles of incorporation. The Laymen's fellowship will meet for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson house. The building committee will meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim house. The purpose of the meeting is to study first sketches pre pared by the church's archi tect, Warren Weber. YCW Members To Be In Portland Seven Young Christian Workers from Medford will be in Portland next week dur ing the three-day visit to that city of Monsignor Joseph Cardijn, 79-year-old founder of the Young Christian Work ers movement. This is the first time that Father Cardijn has visited the United States since 1959. He organized the group in Bel gium 30 years ago. The Christ ian Family Movement and the Young Christian Students are two American groups within this lay apostolate. Heading the local delega tion will be Robert Bctscharl, YCW president. The group will leave Medford Wednes day evening and will attend a breakfast Thursday morning at the airport honoring Father Cardijn. That evening Oregon members of the YCW. CFM. and YCS will attend a dinner for Father Cardijn. Friday evening a public rally will be held in Portland at which Father Cardijn will speak. Musical Moores To Sing Sunday The Musical Moores will be featured Sunday at the 9:45 a.m. Sunday school hour and the 7:30 p.m. service at Four square church. 2200 Roberts rd. The Moores have appear ed here on various other evan gelistic occasions. There will be singing and musical num bers by all members of the family. The Rev. Wesley Moore will speak for both the morning and evening services. During Sunday school an "envelope hunt" will be pre sented. Mrs. Loyd Rasinusson, superintendent, announced the clue at the last Sunday serv ice. Each person taking a visit or will receive a gift from the treasure bag. The Roberts family will participate in the service following which there will be a social hour in their honor in the fellowship hall. At the 11 a.m. worship service Pastor Clynton Cris man will speak and the choir will sing an anthem. The "Young in Heart" group will have a picnic dinner together on the church lawn following the morning service. Witnesses To Attend District Event in Eureka Leo A. Mahan, circuit min ister of Jehovah's Witnesses, will conclude his circuit ac tivity this week to attend the "Courageous Ministers" dis trist assembly in Eureka, Calif. According to Harlan S. Nixon, presiding minister of the Medford congregation, Mahan will be one of four circuit ministers from the northwestern United States that will participate in the tnree-day convention pro gram which begins July 27 at the Eureka Redwood fair grounds. Mahan, known in Medford, has been assigned to speak on the subject, "The Value of Right Association" on Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at 7:45 p.m. he will appear as a part of a symposium discus sing the subject, "The Bene fits of Subjection to Authori ties." Aside from his program as signments Mahan will be in charge of the volunteer serv ice department which will process and assign hundreds of volunteer workers to 20 convention departments. These workers will serve the 4.000 delegates from 70 con gregations comprising four circuits in California, Oregon and Nevada. Delegates from Canada, New York, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Ida ho will also attend. Public Address Highlight of the convention will be the public address, "Take Courage-God's King dom Is at Hand!" on July 29 at 3 p.m. by Lester M. Dugan, Brooklyn, traveler and lec turer for the past 17 years, representing world headquart ers of Jehovah's Witnesses in New York. Eldon Holmes, Central Point, will give a scriptural discussion on the subject, "How Firm Is Your Faith?" at the Kingdom hall, 2402 Jacksonville highway, Sun day. It will be followed by the Watchtowcr study at 5 p.m. Bible study will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Picnic, Bible School Plans Announced By Yreha Baptist Church Yreka - The First Raptisl church of Yreka is planning its annual anniversary picnic at the Yreka city park on July 29 following the morn ing service. Mrs. Nancy Kaylor will sing, "The Lord Is My Light" and the chancel choir will sing "I Sing as I Arise". Sunday Geneva Fellowship will meet at the church at 1 p.m. to go to Bushnell's cabin at Lake of the Woods for water skiing and swimming. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by a meeting. Area Adventists To Convention A number of Rogue Valley Seventh-day Adventists are planning to attend all or part of the ten-day 49th Interna tional Convention of the Gen eral Conference of Seventh day Adventist to be held in San Francisco, July 26 to Aug. 4. Lyle Cornforth, former pas tor of Medford Seventh-day Adventist church, 1900 Green wood dr., announced that more than 20.000 persons are expected to attend the ses sions. They will represent some 200 countries. The first session will be held Thursday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. Highlight of the event will be the election of world officers for a four-year term and the presentation of reports by international lead ers of the church. Saturday, July 28, mem bers will join in a world-wide day of fasting and prayer to ask divine guidance in world problems. The conference will be held In the San Francisco Civic auditorium. Nazarene Activities Listed for Week The Rev. Harold M. Sanner, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st., will speak on the subject "Can You Be Pure?" in the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday. In the 7 p.m. service his message theme will be "Sow ing in the Spirit." Music for these services, as announced by Perry Chris- tiansen, minister of music and education, will be the sanctu ary choir singing "Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah" and a tenor solo by Jack Dclmonte in the morning service. College Quartet to Sing in Ashland Ashland The Foresters, a male quartet from Concordia Teacher's college, River For est, 111., will sing in Sunday's services at Grace Lutheran church, Frances lane, Ash land. The quartet is scheduled to sing in both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. service, according to the pastor, the Rev. Albert R. Nichodemus. Sunday will be the last Sunday of the summer when two services will be held. For a number of Sundays, begin ning July 29, the only Sun day morning service will be held at 8:30 o'clock followed by Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. The pastor's topic Sunday will be "Fishing With and For Jesus." Central Point Group To Hear Evangelists Central Point-The Rev. and Mrs. Richard Ekstedt, who have just returned from the Island of Curacao, Nether lands Antilles after 24 years in missionary service, will be guest speakers at the Com munity Bible church, Fourth and Alder sts., Central Point Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Ekstedt and their two sons, Daniel and Stanley, will present both vocal and Instrumental musi cal numbers. Mrs. Ekstedt, is the author of several publications that have been translated into sev eral languages. Mr. Ekstedt has done work In translation of the Scriptures and gospel hymns. Power of Hour To Be Stressed Sunday Yet another facet of the power of prayer will be developed in the sermon planned by the Rev. Kath arine Bosworth for Sunday at Unity Church of Medford. Haven and Holly sts., in the course of her month-long series of sermon topics on prayer. The sermon will deal with "The Privilege of Prayer." with its text taken from Matthew 1:22.
