(UPI) Lumber and Wood Products Industry Slated for Tax Cut By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribun Washington Correspondent Washington -(Special) -The lumber and wood products in dustry will get a tax cut of from $20 to $25 million this 1-ii.iwih year as icsuu J Ul i II c icii- neay rtuiniiua tration's new schedule for d e p reciating a m w . v .......... When Treas- .1 ury Secretary Douglas D 1 1 lon announc ed the new for business Smith tax guidelines last weeK. He said il would save corpo rations and other reporting business income about $1.5 billion a year. The Treasury Department estimates that about $20 million of this will be saved by the lumber and wood products industry, but the National Lumber Manu facturers Association believes it will run to $25 million. The tax savings are pos sible if businesses depreciate, or write-off as tax deductions, the total value of new equip ment over a shorter period of time. The government adopt ed the faster write-of&'sched-ule as an inducement to busi ness to invest more capital in new equipment, which will help industry to compete bet ter with foreign manufactur ers and will aid the national economy. Dillon noted that the steel Industry expected to invest its $40 million saving in modern equipment. Adopted To Latter The changes In depreciation schedules for the lumber In dustry were based on recom mendations submitted in June by a committee of lumber in dustry executives. The Na tional Lumber Manufacturers Association reports that the Treasury adopted the Indus try's suggestions "to the let ter." Among those Industry executives were the following with Northwest companies: Mils B. Hull, Hull Lumber and Plywood Co.; Harry J. Kane, Georgia-Pacific Corp.; N. B. Livermore, Jr. Pacific Lumber Co.; Arthur McCourt, Weyerhatiser Co.: and Harold F. Stevens, St. Regis Paper Co. The NLMA observed that "firms in the lumber-wood products - furniture industry gained much more under the new rules than did companies in most other industry classi fications, particularly wood's competitors. ' Under the new Treasury rules, production machinery and equipment used in log ging and portable sawmills and road building is given a "guideline life" of 6 years, which is what the industry recommended. Previously, the depreciation life was 10 to 15 years for logging equipment and 10 to 12 years for port able sawmill machinery. For permanent or wcll cstablished sawmills, the new guidelines provide a life of 10 years for production ma chinery, as recommended by the Industry, compared with the old rule requiring 20 to 25 years. Machinery used In the man ufacture of lumber, plywood veneers, furniture, flooring and other wood products Is given a life of 10 years, also, compared with 10 to 25 years "Shall I Entreat You With Me....?" pr. . for the banners will soon fly from the penthouse mast and th trumpets will salute another summer of showtime in Ashland. For 1962, the Oregon Shakespearean Festival presents 44 nights of excitement under the stars. LOCAL PATRONS ARE ADVISED TO MAKE THEIR RESERVATIONS AT ONCE FOR THE 1962 FESTIVAL SEASON. Heavy traffic to and from the Seattle World's Fair may increase the number of drop-ins this year; for this reason, the Festival Association encourages local patrons to make their reserva tions immediately. BEST SEATING IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE PERIOD JULY 22 TO AUGUST 5, WHEN ADVANCE RESERVATIONS ARE AT THEIR LIGHTEST. NLMA said the average period in the past has been 16 to 18 years. Among other examples of faster write-offs that will con ceivably help lumber compan ies are these: office furniture, fixtures, machines and equip-ment-10 years; general pur pose trucks under 13,000 pounds-4 years; and trucks over 13,000 pounds-6 years tractor units (over-the-road)- 4 years; trailers and trailer mounted containcrs-8 years and vessels, barges, tugs and similar water transportation units-18 years. On the question of lumber coming out better than com peting Industries, NLMA not ed that "the 10-year guide line for lumber-wood prod ucts-furniture is well below the IB years for steel, 14 years for aluminum, 12 years for fabricated metal products, 20 years for cement, 14 years for glass products and 15 years for stone and clay prod ucts." In presenting Its recommen dations to the government, the Industry cited such fac tors as the Inroads on wood's markets by competitive ma terials and increased competi tion from abroad. EIGHT DWARFS?
