Looking down into the shallow, crystal clear water we cov'd plainly see him swimming slowly, a long gray shadow. We could almost count the numerous teeth that were stuck in a hit-or-miss pattern on the long snout. The saw fish that was moving under us was all of a dozen feet in length. We recalled the wild stories we had heard from fishermen and wondered if this monster we were watching was get ting ready to attack us. No Tumuli But the gray shadow pass ed. No tumult in the water, no shattered boat-bottom, the sawfish was moving slowly away; he had no intention of attacking. We rowed careful ly attempting to stay close enough behind to watch every move, but still at a safe distance. The big fish pushed ahead, forcing the long flat body over the sand bar. Once over the hump, in slightly deeper water, the sawfish came to rest. What happened then changed our previous de scription of this particular fish. We had been saying "he," but we had made a reasonable mistake, for now we saw some tiny sawfish were being born. Perfect rep licas of the old lady, the youngsters were sand colored, and each carried a tiny saw on its baby snout. Caught Baby We scooped up a frighten ed youngster in a dip-net. There was a fleshy sheath, like a soft scabbard over the saw, a wise provision of na ture to protect the mother. This sheath drops away a few hours after birth and the little sawfish is in business. The old lady lost all inter est in the babies as soon as they were born. She strug gled now to recross the bar and head for deeper water. Strange, that in this day and age there should be such a peculiar creature in the sea, or that they should be so num erous; warm, tropical waters shelter great numbers of them. The sawfish is really a misfit. He has too much weight and too formidable a weapon. Terrible Temper He has been credited by those who profess to know him with a terrible temper, which with his peanut-sized brain is a dangerous combin ation for any creature. The saw on the end of his snout is actually a flat blade of bone, as wide as six inches In a big fish, and armed along both sides with a couple of dozen pairs of sharp teeth. When hungry the fish is sup posed to rush into a school of fish, slashing from right to left with the armed saw. The killed and crippled fish are later eaten.
