It is only natural, therefore, that they should take an interest in Pregnant astronauts. The maternal aspects of space travel came up for dis cussion at a subcommittee hearing on the role, if env, that women should have in exploring the wild blue J'onder. One witness, Jacqueline Cochran, expressed the view that a training program for female astronauts would be handicapped by extra curri cular complications, such as motherhood. But another witness, Mrs. Janey B. Hart, expressed the view thai child-bearing proclivities wouldn't be a drawback at all. Miss Cochran, in private life the wife of industrialist Floyd Odium, spoke with au thority as the world's best known woman flier and the holder of more records than any livinr; pilot of either sex. Mrs. Hart likewise spoke with authority. She. too, is an aviatrix. Furthermore, she is the wife of Sen. Philip A. Hart, which presumably makes her a senatorix. And. in addition to all of that, she has eight children. If I were a member of the committee. I would have trouble choosing between the Immediate lady-in-space pro gram advocated by Mrs. Hart and the cautious approach recommended by Miss Cochran. As Mrs. Hart pointed out, the fact that they have babies occasionally needn't prevent women from having a career as well. Bui. as noted by Miss Cochran, training an astro naut is an expensive propo sition. The money would be wasted if the trainee went to the delivery room in stead of the launching pad. All things considered, I'm Inclined to favor Miss Coch ran's suggestion that women be trained as spaceship crew members, rather than pilots. Portland Showing 01 'Lovers' Not Violation of Law Salem-lUPIl-The Oregon Su preme court has ruled 4-3 that a Portland showing of the film "The Lovers" did not violate the 1961 state obscen ity law. At the same time, the court declined to consider constitu tionality of the law. The movie was first shown at the Guild Theater, and later at the Paramount Theater. The case was the second brought by the state. The state lost the first case also. The majority opinion, : written by Justice Kenneth O'Conncll. ruled in favor of the defendants, Merle M. 1 Meshcr, Ronald K. Mesher, John Doe, Richard Roe and Jane Doe. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Charles W. Redding was affirmed, and the state's case dismissed. Movies Not Included The 1961 law says that a person disseminates obscene matter if he "sells, delivers or provides" it. But the court said this language cannot be construed to include motion pictures. Dissenting were Justices George Rossman. William Perry and Gordon Sloan. The high court, in a decis lion written by Justice Hall S. Lusk, reversed a $10,797 judgment for Elizabeth Krax berger in a car accident case and sent it back to Clackamas county. In reversing Clackamas County Circuit Judge Howard K. Blinding, the court said there was an error in instruc tions to the jury. The judg ment had been made againts Joseph F. Rogers, who appealed. This would cast them their traditional role as back seat drivers. Look out! You almost hit 'that asteroid! ! On the other hand, the en tire issue probably was summed up best in the testi mony of Miss Kerrie Cobb, a professional pilot who under went a series of space flight tests at the Pensacola Naval Base last year. Miss Cobb recalled that Navy doctors who were run ning the tests wired to head quarters for permission to use some equipment that would show how female as tronauts differed from male astronauts. Back from Washington came the reply "If you don't already know the difference, we refuse to put any money in the project."
