MLDFOBD MAIL i'RIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON WEDNESDAY. JULY 18. 1962 B 7 Expensive Hotel To Open Near City Of Caracas Soon By CLAIRE COX United Press International Caracas. Venezuela - OL -A $40 million hotel started five years ago by the Vene zuelan government is sched tiled to open by the end of the year under the management of a leading U.S. hotel chain. The hotel, possibly the world's most expensive at a cost of about $100,000 per room, is situated on a beach an hour and fifteen minutes' drive from Caracas and only a few minutes from Vene ruela's chief seaport of La Gunira and Maiquctia inter national airport. To be called the Sheraton Mncuto, the 410-room hotel, with rooms beginning at S9 for a single and $13 for a double, consists of four build incs containing 16 kinds of Italian marble, espresso ma chines, television in every room, a snack bar and enough washers and dryers in the basement to operate a com mercial laundry. Extending along 1,500 feel of beach are a 12 - story main hotel building with a night club, bar and health Huh on the top floor. Next to it is a smaller structure de voted to apartments for long term guests, The two other buildings were constructed on the Hawaiian lanai prin ciple of informal living and plenty of fresh air. Cabanas have been installed on the beach for Venezuelans wish ing to join the hotel's beach Hub. Three Divisions The beach, protected by a man-made reef, will be di vided into three sections, one for the public, one for mem bers of the private club and CUSTOM ROTO-VATING LEVELING, MOWING RAKING Phone 64-2908 Talk About Success! Three swimming pools have been built, for separate use by children, club members and adult guests. There is a golf club nearby, which plans to stage cockfights for tourists, and the rooms in the back of the hotel overlook a yacht basin. Not far down the beach is Puerto Az.ul, an ex pensive club, which will ad mit hotel guests to its fa cilities, including "the finest bowling alleys in South Amer ica." A jitney service will op erate from the hotel, leaving every hour for the drive over ! a super-highway to Caracas i and offering sightseeing tours r of the capital. J Under a long - term con i tract, the government will own the hotel while Sheraton operates it. The hotel was to I have opened last spring, aft i er long negotiations, but Sheraton experts arranged for the government to make ' a number of alterations to ' make the resort more attrac 1 tive to large conventions. Foremost among the changes is construction of an air-conditioned ballroom large enough to accommodate 1, 000 convention delegates. Because the hotel expects to serve around 2,000 lunches on week ends and a mere 200 on some week days, its officials want to make the operation as flexible as pos sible. Restaurants A specialty restaurant will feature seafood, w-ith guests being able to select their fish or lobsters from a tank in the middle of the room. On the beach will be an outdoor grill and snack bar. In addi tion, plans call for a night club and several other res taurants.
