White City Central Point Cheney Studs, scattering runs over five in nings defeated the Klamath Falls Hawks 8 to 4 here Fri day night in the final Area 4 Southern division Ameri can Legion junior baseball games for both teams. It was also tne season con cluder for the Studs. They fin ished with a 4-4 record in the loop. The Hawks compiled 1-7. Don Kilbourn and Mike G lines headed the Cheney of fense with two hits each. Kil bourn singled and doubled to drive in three runs. Glines singled and tripled. He stole home for one marker. Two errors, a fielder's op tion and Kilbourn's double got two runs in the second in ning. Glines had his single in the third frame. He swiped second base, moved to third on a miscue and followed with his scoring steal. Lou Alvarez doubled and Jeff An horn singled him home. Pat Pepper Tripled An error, two wild pitches snd a Kilbourn hit gained a run in the fourth inning. Pat Pepper scored in the fifth on his triple and Lou Alvarez's sacrifice fly. Neil Rivenburg singled in the sixth panel and hit a batter, an error and Gline's three-master put over two runs. Glines was out try ing to stretch his hit to a homer. Klamath tabulated twice in Wright Leads At Milwaukee Milwaukee - (Ij'PD - Mickey Wright built her lead to four Strokes Saturday in the $10, 000 Milwaukee Jaycee open golf tournament with a two over par 72 in the third round of play. Miss Wright, a lanky, at tractive blonde from San Di ego, Calif., coupled her per formance on the wind-swept Tuckaway Country club course with two earlier par rounds of 70 for a total of 212. The 1961 women's triple crown champion, held an in side track to take the tour nament title and $1,135 first place money in Sunday's fi nal round of the 72-hold com petition. Mary Lena Faulk, Thomas ville, Ga., another veteran of the LPGA tour who is press ing Miss Wright for leading money winner honors this year, turned in a 73 for a total of 216 and second place at the three-quarter mark. Larry whiffed four, walked three batters and allowed two hits and two runs in 2 13 innings. Mike in 4 13 fanned three, walked one, gave up five hits and was charged with two runs. Pat was sent into pitch to the last Hawk batter. But he walked the first man he faced before striking out the next. Marv Davis, on the hill for KF, yielded eight hits to Cen tral Point. N.Y., - OTIl - Dick Sikes of Spring dale, Ark., won his second straight national amateur pub lic links golf championship Saturday with a gruelling 2 and 1 victory over scrappy Hzng Soo Ann of Honolulu, Hawaii. The 22 - year - old Univer sity, of Arkansas senior, get ting better as he went along, wore down the tiny Hawaiian and ended the match on the 35th hole of the scheduled 36 hole final. ' Sikes, three down after 10 holes, notched an eagle three on the 11th hole and tied the match when Ahn bogeyed the 17th hole in the morning round. The two sharp - put ting contestants waged a see saw battle from the 18th hole through the 27lh with the match still deadlocked at that point. The champion hit a tre mendous lee shot on the 177 yard par - three 21st hole. The ball dropped three feet from the pin as Sikes just missed a hole in one. Sikes and the 32 - year - old Ahn both birdied the next hole and Sikes went one-up with his third straight birdie on the 23rd hole of the 6,697 yard Sheridan Park course. Ahn, who had taken the 20th hole after Sikes shot a bogey five, also won the 27th to even the match again. Sikes took the lead again on the 28th with a par four to Ann's bogey. Both players birdied the 29th hole and halved the next two holes before Sikes sank a 30-foot putt from the edge of the green on the 32nd for a birdie three. They halved the next three holes and it was all over. Ahn missed a golden op portunity to get back in con tention when he blew a three foot putt on the 33rd hole. His tee shot hit three feet from the pin on the 151-yard three - par hole and he had to settle for a par when his putt rolled a few inches past the cup. Sikes had a two - under- par 69 over the first 18 holes. He finished the day with sev en birdies and an eagle. Griffith posted a unanimous decision to keep the title (UPD Griffith Outpoints Dupas, Keeps Title Las Vegas, Nev. (DPI) Welterweight champion Em ile Griffith appeared to have overcome a big mental road block in his ring career -he believes for all practical purposes he has erased the death of Benny (Kid) Paret from his memory. Griffith, the 23-year-old fighting milliner from New York and the Virgin Islands, Friday night made his first ring appearance since he fa tally injured Paret March 24. He scored a unanimous 15 round decision over the vet eran Ralph Dupas of New Or leans before a crowd of 5.169 that paid $53,610 to watch the non-televised fight at Con vention Center. Not Easy It was not an easy fight. Dupas, veteran of 116 fights, used a lot of slick tactics and was a moving target at all times. Griffith never really clip ped him good until the 15th round when he belted Dupas from one corner of the ring to the other with hard rights to the Jaw. Dupas covered up and remained on his feet at the final bell. There were no knockdowns in the bout. After the fight, the happy Griffith, not even breathing heavily, said, "I was fighting Olson Cards 80 In Jaycee Golf Doug Olson, Medford, card ed an 80 at Tualatin Country club Friday in the Oregon Junior Chamber of Com merce Golf tournament. Scores of other Medford en tries were Tom Clark 81 and Mike Miller 83. Hill McCrae, Pendleton, was Friday leader with a 71. Scott Smith, Oswego, shot 73, Mike O'Toole, Portland, a 74 and John Krogh and Dick Iverson, Portland, both 76s. Tualatin, Ore. (UPD - Bill Mc Crae of Pendleton captured the 36-hole Oregon junior Chamber of Commerce golf tournament with a one-over par 143 here Saturday. McCrae shot a 72 in the fi nal round. He fired a 71 In the first round Friday. Mark Gustafson of Corvallis and John Krogh of Portland fin ished with 152s to tie for sec ond place. Mike O'Toole nf Portland and Scott Smith of Lake Os wego tied for fourth with 153s. McCrae, Gufftafson, Krogh and O'Toole qualified for berths In the National Junior Chamber of Commerce Tour nament at Huntington, W. Va. Aug. 20-25. Now I know I don't have to hold back. I can fight my fight." Griffith's managers, Gil Clancy, and Howard Albert, said they had no definite plans for another title de fense. Zarley Wins Pacific Golf Vancouver, B. C. - (UNI -Kirmlt Zarley of Yakima, Wash., Saturday won the 63rd annual Pacific N o rt h west Golf association tournament at the Vancouver Golf club. Zarley defeated the pres ent Canadian junior champi on Terry Campbell of Van couver, B.C., on the last hole of the 36-hole final. Twenty - year - old Zarley had a four-up lead after the morning round but willed in the afternoon sun as Camp bell fired a four-under par 68 to make it close. Zarley lost the 19th to a birdie but won the 21st and 22nd holes with birdies. On the 300-yard 24th hole. Campbell put a wedge shot in the cup for an eagle two. He then went on to win two more holes in a row and cut the margin to two down aft er 27 holes. Campbell lost the 2!)lh when he three putted from 30 feet. He got that one back on the 32nd hole when he came out of the trees with a spectacular shot. Campbell was unable to win any of the last three holes although he did manage a birdie in the 365. In the women's finals, Mrs. Robert Ihlanfeldt of Seattle defeated June Robinson of Al bany, Ore., 8 and 7. The Cokes will oppose the powerful Lockwood Motors team of Roseburg. Game time at Memorial field, White City, is 1 p.m. While Medford will meet Roseburg for the first time this season, the Lockwoods will make their second ap pearance of 1962 on the Vet erans Administration domicil iary field. , Roseburg will close out a series of three week end dou bleheaders today. This activ ity is evidence of a busy schedule for the Umpqua val ley team. And the Lockwoods have had a full slate and have swept through it impressively, playing twice as many games as Medford. Through last Wednesday Roseburg had a 31-3 season record compared to Mcdford's current 12-4. Enyart and King The teams are both mem bers of Area 4 but today's games have no bearing on the outcome of the title race. Roseburg plays in the North ern division and Medford in the Southern. Lockwood head ed its division through Wed nesday with a 14-1 record and was 4ii games ahead of North Eugene which held second spot. Medford is 5-3 in the South. The Cokes are in sec ond place with their loop slate finished but still in po sition for a three-way tie in final standings. Coach Cliff McLean indi cated last week that Bill Eny art and Bob King would be his pitchers for today's games for Medford. Roseburg Coach Bill Harper has a big mound staff to pick from, Among his throwers are Tom Hobbs, Lyle Charon, Dick Williams, Jon Burham, Jerry Boucock and Ken Droscher. While Medford is enter taining Roseburg in a non- Action Taken At West Point West Point, N. Y.-IUPD- The U.S. Military Academy has taken measures to prevent West Point coaches from prom is i n g appointments to young athletes. The action was touched off by Rep. Samuel S. Startton, D-N.Y., Wednesday when he charged that Schenectady; N. Y., high school basketball star Robert DeLuca would not be able to enter West Point despite a promise by Army basketball coach George Hunter. Academy public Informa tion officer Col. J. B. Stephens explained DeLuca did not re ceive an appointment because there were no existing vacan cies. . "The academy," Stephens emphasized, "has taken steps to see that similar instances did not occur again. All ath letic coaches have been briefed on what they may and may not do in regard to ap pointments. But in the final analysis appointments are made by the Department of the Army on the basis of rec ommendations from the aca demic board." Stephens said the academy was sorry for what happened. The stale highway' commission had of fered $3,300 for the 1.2 acres taken a quarter mile from the Crater Lake highway and Bid die rd. intersection. Total acreage was 9.95 acres. IUPI) -Dave Ragan and Don Massen- gale threw the $35,000 Motor City Open into a three-way tie for the lead after three rounds Saturday by catchinc second- day leader Bruce Crampton of Sydney, Australia. Masscngalc, an unsponsored 25-year-old from Jacksboro, Tex., fired a three-undcr-par 68 to wind up with a 12-under-par total of 201 at the Knoll wood Country Club course. Hapan, 26-year-old runner- up in last week's Buick open, carded a 69 while Crampton, the leader at the 36-hole half way mark, slipped to a 70 af ter firing rounds of 66 and 65. The three young pros will be battling for the 5,300 first prize in the final 18 holes of the tournament Sunday. Three strokes back of Ihe leaders were Bob Goalby, Per idio Bay, Fin., and Bill Casper Jr., Apple Valley, Calif. Casper, seeking his fourth tournament victory of the year, went out in great fash ion with a three-under-par 33, sinking three long birdie putts. The defeat broke Hernan dez' winning string at seven straight. Hernandez, tail and musta chioed, had held Lane to a draw at Caracas, Venezuela - Carlos' home town - on Feb. 20. 1961, but 22-ycar-old Her nandez was favored at 17-5 to beat 30-year-old Lane Satur day night. Hernandez, top contender, was penalized the sixth and ninth rounds for fouls. But on the United Press Internation al score card the compact, sandy-haired Lane had won those sessions anyway.
