MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Home Study Said Tc Bring Results In Advancements New York - WD - This may surprise none at a time when slock market writhings have made ordinary citizens acute ly sensitive to money matters, but an organization devoted to home study in such things has reported most workers who study finance and ac counting do well by them selves. No! necessarily in the slock market. The survey didn't cover this, and it might be hard to keep up with profits and losses there. In stead, it devoted itself to the way that home students made out in saleries and promo tions. Oldest School The survey was made by International Accountants So ciety, Inc., which says it is the oldest and largest home study school in the field of accounting and allied man ascment. It covered 5,343 per sons who had received diplo mas from the IAS in the past 3 0 years and found that 3,840 of them got pay raises and 2.728, or more than half, got promotions about the time they completed their studies. Annual canvasses were made in a 10-year period, J952 through 1961, of those who finished the complete course. The IAS said 87.7 per cent returned questionnaires with information on promo tions and salary increases. The canvasses did not include persons who subscribed to shorter courses to concentrate on specific subjects. Expanding Curriculum The IAS has headquarters In Chicago and is expanding its curriculum to provide in struction in business subjects not necessarily connected di rectly with accounting prob lems. "Today's narrowed profit margins and complex tax laws, among other considera tions," said IAS president Byron Mendies in a statement released here, "make it es sential that anyone aspiring to his company's executive level to be thoroughly train ed in financial and manage ment techniques." In other words, if you work for someone, you'll be more valuable and stand a better chance of promotion if you know how money is handled and affairs are run. FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1962 KENNEDY GAVE IN Washington - mm - Presi dent Kennedy gavp In to House farm leaders Thursday and said in advance exactly how he would use authority he requested to allot among Latin American countries an additional 150.000 tons of premium-priced sugar. Emphasis on Learning To Read Needed for StudentTo Advance BY DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist The teaching of reading has many implications for school and home. Some parents are confused by the many theo ries, criticisms, and compari sons of the subject. Obviously, reading is the most important academic area since it is basic to all knowledge. Based upon this fact, schools concentrate on reading during the primary grades. An emphasis on learn ing to read is needed before a student can make extensive advances in most other areas. Comparisons with Russian or European methods actually have few implication for us in that our language is quite different. An analysis of Eng lish will show a need for mas tery of a variety of skills. A pure phonics approach is as inadequate as a total sight ap proach. We must be prepared to teach reading by many methods. In addition to the irregu larity of our language, we have the irregularity of learn ing. Readiness is constantly referred to when reading is discussed. A child's readiness to read depends upon his physical development, eyes, ears; motivation, experiences, and emotional adjustment. Naturally, the combination of these items cannot be expect ed to develop at the same speed in each individual. The broad area covered by the actua; learning of read ing means that much more than mechanical teaching Is necessary. Of course, there are many intricacies of teach ing for which much training and experience is needed. Court Records DISTRICT COURT Karen Ann Kielgaard. violation of hasic rule. $10. How can these skills be developed.' Most children enjoy hearing adults read. They develop in terest as they listen and par ticipate. How? Inject ques tions such as: And what do you think will happen next.' Motivate the stories with ex pression and interest. Along with the develop ment of skills, your child should also develop motiva tion. As he has more exciting experiences with books he : will want to delve further. Relate actual events and de ! sires to books. Your reading land his should be shared. , .Create an atmosphere of respect toward books and the i child's reading them. Give him a section of a bookshelf for his own books. Don't in terrupt him when he is read- I lug. Provide a quiet place ; where he can get lost in the world of books. 1 Avoid Pressur Above all. do not create a feeling of pressure. Avoid comparing his accomplish ments with classmates or oth- 1 er members of the family. Reading is an integral part i of learning. Take advantace of the child's interests. En- courage reading but avoid i pressure. Do not discourage 'a narrow concentration of reading but build upon this interest. Variety will devel op as the child's curiosity and scope of experience grows. The major aim should I be to develop a respect and knowledge of the fascinating world which can be unlocked through books.
