A preliminary report of a survey by the La bor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Na t i o n a 1 Science foundation showed 850,000 scientists and engineers employed in indus tries within the scope of the survey during January, 1961. Nearly half worked as chemists. A total of 19 Nobel prize winners are on faculties of California Institutions, more than any other state.
